About the Role
As a Software Engineer on the Baseball Systems team, you will help create and support internal web tools and data workflows that serve Baseball Operations groups such as the Front Office, Scouting, Player Development, and Major League Operations. The position is based on-site in San Diego, CA, and contributes directly to building a stronger team on the field.
You will work with software and data engineers, analysts, and Baseball Operations staff to understand their needs and deliver practical technology solutions.
What You’ll Do
- Create, review, and launch new capabilities for internal web applications.
- Build inventive ways to present baseball information clearly to end users.
- Develop and support pipelines that pull data from outside baseball providers into internal systems.
- Shape data so it is dependable, easy to understand, and simple for developers and analysts to use.
- Improve the speed, stability, and scalability of applications and related processes.
- Partner with cross-functional teammates to learn their workflows and build tools that support them.
What You Bring
- Strong computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, and Outlook, plus basic office equipment.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work respectfully in a collaborative setting.
- Ability to explain technical ideas to non-technical users and convert business needs into software solutions.
- Strong troubleshooting ability and experience resolving complex software issues.
- Excellent organization and time management skills, with the ability to juggle detailed work and meet demanding deadlines.
- Professional judgment, integrity, accountability, and discretion.
- Experience building web applications, databases, and data warehouses.
- Interest in baseball and working knowledge of baseball statistics and analytics.
- Solid programming fundamentals and experience with one or more languages such as Python or JavaScript.
- Comfort with front-end technologies such as HTML and CSS.
- Experience with modern databases and writing SQL.
- Experience using Git or another version control system.
- Bilingual ability in a language commonly spoken by baseball players, such as Spanish, Japanese, or Korean, is a plus.
- Python experience for backend development and data manipulation is preferred.
- Experience with frameworks such as Django or Flask, and JavaScript frameworks such as Angular, React, or Vue, is a plus.
- Prior exposure to cloud services such as AWS Redshift, Glue, RDS, EC2, ECS, and Lambda, or equivalent Azure/GCP tools, is preferred.
- Familiarity with orchestration and transformation tools such as Dagster, Airflow, dbt, and Apache Spark is a plus.
Additional Requirements
- You must be 18 years of age or older by the start date.
- A four-year bachelor’s degree, or equivalent education, is preferred, ideally in Computer Science or a related discipline.
- Availability for flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on the baseball calendar.
- You should be able to travel within the ballpark and access different areas for long periods during games and events.
- You must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Employment is subject to successful completion of post-offer pre-employment checks, including a background check.
Compensation and Benefits
The base salary range for this full-time position is $100,000 to $125,000 per year. Final pay will depend on experience, education, job-related skills, and other relevant hiring factors.
