About the team
Global Banking and Markets Engineering (GBME) is Scotiabank’s fast-paced, award-winning technology group supporting the Corporate, Investment Banking, and Capital Markets businesses.
About the role
Scotiabank is hiring Software Engineers with strong Python and PL/SQL experience to help advance capital markets products and analytics platforms, with primary focus on the Risk and Margin platform in Prime Services Technology. This position calls for a strong engineering mindset, the ability to learn continuously, and a collaborative approach to solving business problems.
You will work with business stakeholders and engineering leaders to design and deliver practical, scalable solutions across a range of GBME initiatives. The work is well-suited to someone who enjoys tackling complex challenges, using modern technologies, and contributing across multiple projects.
Key work activities
- Collaborate with end users and business teams to clarify needs, identify gaps, and assess requirements.
- Work with architecture teams on design and system integration decisions.
- Build, improve, and support both new and existing applications and solutions.
- Take part in the complete project lifecycle, including specifications, production-ready coding, and implementation.
- Create and maintain database schemas.
- Develop test cases and automate testing wherever possible, covering functional, non-functional, regression, and performance testing.
- Prepare deployment scripts and use release tools such as Accelerator pipeline to move code forward.
- Provide production support when required.
- Improve the user experience by delivering scalable solutions and resolving complex ad hoc queries.
- Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Work with legacy code and refactor it when needed.
- Coach and train end users as needed.
- Join and facilitate Scrum meetings when required.
Required experience and skills
The ideal candidate should bring at least 4 years of recent backend development experience using Python and PL/SQL, along with practical database and SQL knowledge. Experience with Python and Windows batch scripting is also expected.
You should be comfortable working in Agile teams and have a solid understanding of Test-Driven Development. Exposure to capital markets operations, including front office, middle office, and back office processes, is preferred. Familiarity with messaging technologies such as IBM MQ, Kafka, or Redis is also valued, along with experience in real-time systems that demand high availability and low latency.
Experience with Java multithreaded applications is an added advantage. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience is required.
