Role overview
Hume City Council is seeking a Student Planner to join its City Strategy team in Broadmeadows, Victoria. This is a fixed-term position for 2 years, offered on a part-time basis of 22.8 hours per week. The annual salary is $77,133.68, pro rata, plus superannuation.
The role sits within a fast-growing and culturally diverse local council that places customers and community needs at the centre of its services. The successful candidate will support supervised research and contribute to policy development and planning projects for the City Strategy Department.
What you will do
- Handle general correspondence within set timeframes and respond to phone and front counter enquiries as directed by the Coordinator Growth Area and Transport Planning.
- Support the administration of developer contributions during the subdivision approval process when required.
- Review simple planning proposals, such as planning scheme amendments, referred permit applications, and developer contributions levy requests, with guidance from strategic planning colleagues and in line with the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and the Hume Planning Scheme.
- Work cooperatively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Take part in liaison activities with planning proponents and other levels of government under supervision from the Coordinator Growth Area and Transport Planning and other strategic planning staff.
- Assist with creating presentations and supporting materials, including GIS-based mapping, information pamphlets, circulars, and webpage maintenance.
Skills and experience
- A growing understanding of Victorian planning legislation, planning processes, and how they connect to local government and the Hume area.
- Awareness of the economic, social, and environmental influences that shape planning policy and decision-making.
- Strong problem-solving ability, research skills, and the capacity to examine the impacts of planning proposals within a strategic context, with support from colleagues.
- Ability to use GIS and related systems, and to work with data to produce maps and plans for analysis and communication.
- Clear communication skills, both spoken and written, for engaging with the public, council staff, and diverse stakeholder groups.
- Capability to interpret policy and build practical knowledge of the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and the Victorian Planning Provisions.
Qualifications and checks
You should either hold a relevant qualification or currently be studying for a bachelor’s degree or postgraduate qualification in urban and regional planning, urban design, landscape architecture, or a related field.
A current driver’s licence is required.

This is a fixed-term contract for 2 years and part-time employment of 22.8 hours per week. The role is based onsite in Broadmeadows, Victoria.
