Surveyor I

Role overview

This is a junior-level surveying role suited to recent graduates and professionals with under 5 years of experience in a relevant industry. Reporting to a direct supervisor, the position involves carrying out standard survey work on marine assets and building the capability to inspect and document vessels and other marine structures during and after construction. The work supports compliance with ABS class requirements and statutory obligations linked to safety of life at sea, loadline, tonnage, cargo gear, and pollution prevention certification.

What you will do

• Serve as a subject-matter specialist in applying relevant rules, regulations, requirements, concepts, principles, and processes.
• Carry out routine surveys on classed vessels, platforms, and other marine structures, as well as at manufacturing sites, to verify class and statutory compliance.
• Produce clear, accurate, and prompt inspection and survey reports.
• Work directly with clients to help resolve issues within the scope of your technical knowledge.
• Keep survey records organized, current, and properly maintained.
• Build capability in office procedures and help monitor business performance for the assigned port.
• Take on broader and more complex assignments to deepen understanding of field operations, policies, methods, and procedures.

Qualifications and experience

• A tertiary qualification in engineering or physical science from a program of at least two years; or
• A qualification from a marine or nautical institution, together with relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer.
• English proficiency suitable for statutory certification work and for the duties expected in the assigned role.
• Appropriate certifications and/or licenses in the area of specialization may be required.

Skills and knowledge

• Ability to build working knowledge of ABS Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, related instructions, and the ABS Employee Safety Policy.
• Comfort reading engineering drawings and understanding basic shipbuilding practices and vessel operations.
• Capability to complete surveys in the required format.
• Working knowledge of computer programs or software used in the role.
• Understanding of technical interfaces needed for group project work.
• Knowledge of ship engineering systems and machinery.
• Strong oral and written communication skills for conveying technical information.
• Problem analysis and solution recommendation ability.
• Customer responsiveness and the ability to collaborate effectively with others.
• Ability to become familiar with ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.

Physical and working requirements

• A pre-employment medical examination is mandatory where permitted by local law.
• The role requires adequate strength, stamina, agility, visual acuity, and hearing to perform surveyor duties effectively.
• Ability to climb vertical ladders up to 9 meters and manage steep steps.
• Capability to work at height on staging and lifting equipment.
• Ability to move through tight spaces and work in confined areas for long periods, including kneeling and crawling.
• Exposure may include industrial environments, risk of injury, harsh weather, and physically demanding tasks.
• Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs. / 11.34 kgs.
• Use of small tools and personal protective equipment may be required in line with safety procedures.
• An annual physical may be required, where allowed by local law, to confirm continued fitness for the role.

Reporting line

The role reports to the Principal, Senior, or Surveyor-in-Charge of the assigned port and does not include direct reports.
