Role overview
National Highways is hiring Traffic Officers for the Milness Outstation in Milnthorpe. The role is focused on delivering a customer-centric service while helping manage the strategic road network safely and efficiently, including the response to collisions, debris clearance, and other unplanned incidents.
Working pattern and hours
This is a 24/7, 365-day operation. The shift pattern follows a 6-days-on, 3-days-off rota made up of three early shifts (6:00 am to 2:26 pm), three late shifts (2:00 pm to 10:26 pm), three rest days, three cover shifts that may fall on any of the listed shift times, three night shifts (10:00 pm to 6:26 am), and then three rest days.
Compensation
The base salary is £29,010 plus a 25% shift allowance, giving a total package of up to £36,262.50. After successful completion of probation at 9 months, the base salary rises to £30,210 plus shift allowance, with a combined salary of up to £37,762.50.
What the job involves
- Responding to incidents on the strategic road network and taking safe, timely action to resolve them, including deploying traffic management measures where needed.
- Working closely with colleagues, emergency services, and other responders to manage incidents effectively.
- Contributing proactively as part of a team and helping meet performance targets.
- Using communication tools such as radio and mobile telephony to share accurate, timely updates with colleagues, partners, stakeholders, and customers.
- Taking responsibility for personal and public safety by identifying, reporting, and acting on unsafe conditions or behaviour.
- Keeping accurate records of vehicles and equipment.
About you
- You must hold a full driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points, and you must continue to meet this requirement during employment because driving is part of the role.
- You need to live within one hour’s commuting distance of the vacancy location.
- You should have experience of motorway driving.
- You need knowledge of, and practical experience in, supporting workplace safety.
- You should be able to provide a high standard of customer service.
- You should be self-motivated and comfortable working as part of a team.
- You should have experience of working independently without direct supervision.
