Role overview

Auckland Transport is looking for a Consent Planner to lead and coordinate the statutory consent process for transport projects. This role partners closely with project managers and external specialists to secure the approvals needed to move projects forward.

The work can range from smaller safety-driven improvements, such as road widening, through to major programmes including the Supporting Growth Alliance, Eastern Busway Alliance, and City Rail Link.

You will help assess project needs, review consent material, and support both pre-lodgement and post-lodgement phases with Auckland Council, Heritage New Zealand, and other approval bodies. In some cases, you may also prepare applications internally.

Key responsibilities

  • Take part in team meetings focused on wellbeing, workload, and capacity planning.
  • Work with project teams, including Auckland Transport project managers, consultants, and external agencies such as NZTA.
  • Attend Mana Whenua Kaitiaki Forum meetings with the AT Planning Lead and Project Manager.
  • Meet with affected landowners and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Review design drawings and technical reports to identify Unitary Plan consent requirements and recommend the appropriate consenting approach.
  • Prepare applications for minor safety works and tree-related activities.
  • Support the securing of heritage approvals and wildlife permits from the relevant authorities.
  • Help property teams obtain required asset-owner approvals, including landowner, tree asset owner, and contaminated landfill asset owner approvals.
  • Draft delegated reports that recommend decisions for applications involving works within a designation.

What we’re looking for

The ideal candidate will have a planning qualification or a closely related discipline, along with progress toward full membership of the New Zealand Planning Institute. You should bring 3 to 5 years of planning experience in consenting, preferably within infrastructure and public works.

A strong working knowledge of planning legislation is essential, along with experience operating in a political environment and handling both formal and informal public consultation.

  • Access to AT Connect groups, including Mana ka Māori, Women@AT, and others.
