Role Overview
Frederic Schad is hiring an experienced Customs Specialist in Kingston, Jamaica. This is an on-site full-time position focused on customs compliance, shipment clearance, and operational coordination. Only applicants with prior experience will be considered.
Core Duties
- Check tariff classifications in customs records and confirm they are accurate.
- Keep the internal clearance register current and well organized.
- Ensure compliance with customs legislation and applicable local regulations before, during, and after the clearance process.
- Work with airline, shipping line, supplier, and contractor contacts to support smooth shipment movement and adherence to standard procedures and customer needs.
- Prepare customs paperwork and upload or publish it on the web server.
- Ask the finance team to process payment for duties and related taxes.
- Prepare and file all shipment manifests.
- Track shipment progress and update internal tools such as the Ops log and CargoWise according to company rules.
- Follow up with the shipping company regarding arrival notices.
- Handle export documentation submissions.
- Coordinate with customs brokers to obtain current updates on goods in clearance.
- Assist with physical shipment dispatch when required.
- Support shipment delivery to customers in line with standard operating procedures and client requirements.
- Apply for any permits needed by customs.
- Review invoices submitted by customers for accuracy.
- Assist with Delivery Orders in the Port Community System (PCS).
- Identify non-conformities and report them so process improvements can be made.
- Prepare customs declarations for both imports and exports.
- Verify tariff classifications with Jamaica Customs.
- Use sound knowledge of customs laws, regulations, and operational procedures to support the role.
- Perform other operational tasks related to the function as needed.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree is required.
- At least 1 year of relevant experience in a similar role is required.
- Good working knowledge of MS Office is necessary.
- Basic familiarity with AFR and OFR operations, including handling, documentation, and customs clearance, is expected.
