About the Role
The City of Barrie is seeking qualified candidates to join a candidate pool for future full-time Driver vacancies within the Operations Department. This role is crucial for maintaining the city's public works infrastructure, including roads, sidewalks, and green spaces. Drivers are responsible for ensuring the safety and accessibility of Barrie's roadways and public areas for citizens and visitors. The Operations Department encompasses Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, and Roads, Fleet and Technical Operations, all contributing to the city's infrastructure and services.
Responsibilities
- Maintain city sidewalks, roadsides, and roads to ensure safe commuting for residents and visitors.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on sidewalks, roadsides, and stairways during spring, summer, and fall.
- Assist with plowing, sanding, and salting of sidewalks and roadsides during winter months.
- Ensure the removal of debris and litter from sidewalks, roadsides, and stairways.
- Operate various vehicles and equipment for road and sidewalk maintenance.
- Conduct infrastructure repairs on sidewalks and roads.
- Work outside of scheduled hours for standby, overtime, or emergency response duties as required.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid Ontario Class “D” Driver’s Licence with a “Z” endorsement, or the ability and willingness to obtain one within one year.
- A satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required for new employees.
- Secondary School Diploma.
- Minimum of six (6) months of experience in duties directly related to the major responsibilities of the position.
- Demonstrated experience working within a municipal environment.
- Proven experience in municipal construction and maintenance.
- General knowledge of WHMIS and the Ontario Traffic Manual (Book 7), including temporary work zone traffic control setup.
- Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations and protocols.
- Understanding of municipal construction, maintenance, and equipment operations principles.
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment safety, safe lifting procedures, and debris/litter collection and disposal.
- Ability to operate manual and motorized hand tools.
- Capacity to perform strenuous physical work, including lifting objects over 10kg.
- Ability to lead and direct assigned crews effectively.
- Proficiency in writing clear and concise reports.
- Skill in maintaining accurate records of job materials and time spent.
- Intermediate skills in Customer Service, Interpersonal Communication, and Written Communication.

Eligibility
This position is open to individuals who meet the specified education, experience, and licensing requirements. Candidates must be willing to work outside of regular hours for emergency response and possess a valid Ontario Class “D” Driver’s Licence with a “Z” endorsement or be willing to obtain it. A satisfactory Criminal Record Check is mandatory for new hires.
Additional Information
The eligibility list will remain active for a maximum of nine (9) months. This candidate pool is for future permanent, temporary, or casual full-time vacancies. The administration of this pool adheres to Article 13:06 of the CUPE Collective Agreement. Normal hours of work are 40 per week, in accordance with the Collective Agreement. The location for this role is the Operations Centre, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, Ontario.
