Role Overview
This full-time Intermediate Project Engineer position sits within a project management consultancy in Waikato and focuses on Three Waters infrastructure. The role is designed for someone ready to move from mainly technical engineering work into broader project delivery responsibilities, with a strong mix of coordination, stakeholder management, and on-site involvement.
You will contribute to projects that improve drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems, working closely with project managers, engineers, councils, consultants, contractors, and local authority clients. The job is suited to an organised, proactive engineer who enjoys practical problem-solving, teamwork, and delivering outcomes that benefit communities.
The organisation describes the Waikato lifestyle as a change from city pressure, with meaningful work, a supportive team, Friday afternoon beers, and plenty of coffee to keep project schedules looking optimistic.
What You Will Do
- Support delivery of Three Waters infrastructure projects from early planning through procurement, construction, and final handover.
- Coordinate communication and workstreams between designers, contractors, clients, and other stakeholders.
- Assist with tendering, procurement activity, and contract administration tasks.
- Track programme progress, cost performance, quality, and project risks.
- Review technical documents and construction-related deliverables.
- Prepare project reports and manage updates to clients.
- Carry out site visits and monitor construction activity.
- Work collaboratively with local councils, consultants, and contractors.
- Help improve project delivery processes and contribute ideas for better outcomes.
Candidate Profile
The ideal applicant is someone who is comfortable working with people and solving engineering challenges in a practical, solution-oriented way. You should be organised, confident in communication, and able to manage multiple priorities across project delivery.
Strong local experience in civil or infrastructure engineering in New Zealand is preferred, along with familiarity or interest in Three Waters or broader civil infrastructure work. Experience in a consulting environment or with local authorities would be helpful, though it is not essential.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of post-graduate experience in civil or infrastructure engineering in New Zealand.
- Interest in Three Waters or wider civil infrastructure projects.
- Recognised tertiary engineering qualification or an equivalent credential.
- Strong written and verbal communication ability.
- Good organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Collaborative, positive, and solution-focused approach.
- Full New Zealand driver licence.
- Legal right to work in New Zealand.
What We Offer
- Involvement in a wide range of meaningful Three Waters projects.
- Exposure to every stage of project delivery.
- Support from an experienced and approachable team.
- Opportunity to progress toward Senior Project Engineer or Project Manager roles.
- Flexible working arrangements.
- Competitive remuneration.
- A people-first workplace where contribution and initiative are valued.
