Overview
This is a strategic project delivery position based in Christchurch or Dunedin, with work spanning the South Island and wider New Zealand. The role sits within a local South Island team of 35 project and programme management professionals, and connects into a national Project Strategy and Delivery network of more than 180 technical specialists focused mainly on infrastructure assets.
You will take on a broad portfolio across clients, industries, and project types, supporting public and private sector organisations on significant building and infrastructure work. The role offers scope to grow your career through development and progression opportunities aligned with your long-term goals.
The opportunity covers projects of many sizes, from smaller assignments through to major building, industrial, and infrastructure programmes. Key client sectors include aviation, defence, education, commercial, health, transport, industrial, utilities, water, and energy.
What the role involves
You will act as a trusted advisor and delivery practitioner across the buildings and infrastructure project management space, leading work from early initiation and design stages through procurement, consenting, construction, and final handover. The position requires a mix of leadership, commercial judgment, stakeholder engagement, and practical project delivery capability.
Day to day, the role calls for strong communication, relationship building, and the ability to work across multiple parts of the business while coordinating with a wide range of clients and project stakeholders.
Core responsibilities
- Guide complex, multidisciplinary projects from early concept through to completion, keeping delivery aligned with business and project objectives.
- Develop trusted client partnerships by understanding organisational needs and tailoring project management support accordingly.
- Put strong governance, risk oversight, and financial management in place so work is delivered on schedule, within budget, and to the required standard.
- Communicate clearly with internal teams and external stakeholders, while confidently steering groups and influencing project direction.
- Support and mentor junior colleagues, helping build capability and improve team performance.
- Use commercial awareness and strategic thinking to work through challenging problems and deliver value for clients and the wider business.
- Bring working knowledge of the NZS 391X construction contract suite, including experience serving as Engineer’s Representative or Contract Administrator.
What you bring
To succeed, you should be confident operating across both smaller and larger building projects, with the credibility to work effectively with a diverse stakeholder base.
Ideally, you will have experience in infrastructure, buildings, or utilities environments, with consulting background preferred. You should understand the local market and operating context, and be comfortable providing design management, project planning, delivery, and strategic advice.
A successful candidate will combine a proactive approach with strong relationship skills, sound commercial judgment, and a logical, creative mindset for resolving complex issues. A collaborative style and a good sense of humour will also suit the team culture.
About the team and organisation
You will be part of an open, collaborative environment that values cross-functional teamwork and practical problem solving. The wider business draws on deep technical expertise and local South Island leadership to support delivery of important and complex projects across multiple markets.
The organisation is a large independent advisory, design, and engineering consultancy operating across Asia Pacific. It has a long history, a global footprint, and a strong focus on creating value through trusted relationships, service quality, and solutions that help communities, assets, and operations perform better.
Location
Primary location options are Christchurch or Dunedin.
