Role Overview
The Flagger plays a key safety role by controlling vehicle movement around construction zones, road maintenance areas, and other active work sites. This position also includes placing and removing signs, cones, and barricades, and using hand signals, signs, and other control tools to help traffic move safely through or around the area. The work requires strong attention to detail, comfort working outdoors in changing weather, and the ability to remain on your feet for long periods.
Key Duties
- Place traffic control signs, cones, and related equipment to redirect vehicles around work zones.
- Use stop/slow paddles and similar tools to direct traffic safely and efficiently.
- Keep in touch with crew members using two-way radios.
- Be prepared to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands for as long as 10 hours in a day.
- Handle, carry, push, pull, and lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to move traffic control equipment between sites.
- Carry out routine vehicle inspections and basic maintenance checks.
- Work in outdoor conditions and around moving machinery, traffic, fumes, and airborne dust.
- Operate in an environment where noise levels are generally moderate to loud.
- Follow company policies and procedures at all times.
- Take on additional tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Applicants must clear a background screening, including a review of motor vehicle records.
- A successful drug test and compliance with federal DOT requirements are mandatory.
- Proper protective gear must be worn, including safety-toe work boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and safety vest.
- Ability to use a two-way radio.
- Willingness to work in different weather conditions and traffic environments.
- Strong communication skills for working with contractors and internal teams while maintaining high customer service standards.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
- Excellent attendance, dependable transportation, and a solid work ethic are expected.
- Completion of ATSSA Flagger training and company-provided Defensive Driver training is required.
- Must be open to statewide travel, including occasional overnight stays, and able to work nights and weekends as project needs require.
- Availability for a rotating on-call schedule is required.
