Job description
Opportunity
We are looking for three permanent Advisors to join a friendly and energetic Ministerial Correspondence team. This is a chance to use strong writing and relationship-building skills in a role that sits at the centre of timely, accurate government correspondence.
The work is varied, fast-moving, and important. You will need to be confident in your communication, comfortable engaging with people face to face, highly organised, and able to stay calm under pressure. A good grasp of Machinery of Government thinking, sound judgement, and the ability to spot and manage risk are all important.
What the role involves
As an Advisor, Ministerial Correspondence, you will prepare and manage tailored Ministerial services. This includes drafting and handling responses to requests from Ministers, Parliament, participants, and the public, as well as supporting the release of information and the publication of material on the Ministry website.
You will work with colleagues across the Ministry to make sure responses are accurate, legally compliant, aligned with publicly available information, and delivered within required timeframes. You will also help the wider team manage sensitive and complex correspondence requests.
What success looks like
This position suits someone who is resilient, flexible, methodical, and able to juggle several tasks at once. The team is supportive, enthusiastic, and collaborative, and the environment is busy, demanding, and rewarding.
Experience and skills
The ideal candidate will bring around one to two years of experience in an advisory role within a ministerial or correspondence team, along with strong coordination ability, excellent prioritisation, a solid customer focus, and the confidence to build effective relationships and networks in person. You should also have exceptional oral and written communication, strong attention to detail, and a good understanding of public sector structures and processes.
About the organisation
These positions sit within the Ministerial Services team, part of the wider Communications function. The team drafts and oversees official correspondence such as Official Information Act and Privacy Act requests, Ministerial correspondence, Parliamentary questions, and other related material.
The team is based at the Justice Centre in Thorndon, Wellington. Because of the nature of the work, the successful candidate should expect to be primarily office-based. This role is not suitable for remote working.
The Ministry of Justice is an inclusive employer focused on strengthening trust in the law of Aotearoa New Zealand. The workplace is built on respect, safety, support, and inclusion, with diversity welcomed and celebrated.
Benefits
Working here comes with 22 days of annual leave, flexible working hours where possible, access to an online professional development portal, and participation in a range of inclusive and proactive networks. You will also have the chance to build a broad set of skills and experience across the Ministry.
Salary
The appointed salary will be between NZD 74,634 and NZD 100,846, depending on experience and capability.
Application process
To apply, submit a CV and cover letter through the careers site and indicate whether you are interested in fixed term, permanent, or both options. Applications close on 12 July 2026, but applications will be reviewed as they are received, and some candidates may be invited to interview before the closing date. Practical exercises will be part of the interview process. For questions, contact [email protected].
Additional information
There are three permanent opportunities available. Candidates should note that the role is office-based in Wellington and not appropriate for remote work.
Terms and conditions
Applicants may be considered for fixed term, permanent, or both types of opportunity depending on their preference. Interviews may be scheduled before the closing date if a suitable shortlist is identified early.
