Job description

Role overview

CBI Construction is seeking an Assistant Project Manager to support both the project management group and field teams in delivering work that meets the company’s standards for safety, quality, schedule control, and budget discipline. This position reports directly to the Project Manager and plays a hands-on role across preconstruction, procurement, documentation, coordination, and project closeout support.

Key duties

  • Study drawings and specifications in detail to understand project scope and trade partner responsibilities, and prepare quantity takeoffs when needed.
  • Partner with Project Management and Field Operations to build schedules aligned with ownership deadlines, then monitor progress against milestone dates throughout the project.
  • Coordinate with the Preconstruction team to help preserve the original estimate scope during buyout and construction.
  • Help develop schedules of values for subcontracts, share them with trade partners, and confirm receipt.
  • Prepare and gather LOIs, purchase orders, subcontracts, RFQ forms, vendor documents, W-9s, certificates of insurance, and related paperwork.
  • Keep trade partner contact lists current as subcontracts are awarded and purchase orders are issued.
  • Review, collect, and approve invoices and pay applications as directed by the supervisor.
  • Support the review, negotiation, and completion of change order requests.
  • Assist in maintaining project budgets on a weekly basis.
  • Learn and use all required project management software tools.
  • Provide weekly reporting updates to project ownership representatives.
  • Distribute, review, log, and track submittals, shop drawings, substitution requests, and related communications with trade partners, suppliers, consultants, and owner representatives.
  • Track RFIs, keep the log accurate, and ensure project revisions include the necessary RFI updates.
  • Maintain digital project records and document logs through Procore so that corporate, field, and trade teams work from the latest information.
  • Follow the project management items in CBI’s weekly processes and procedures.
  • Help maintain project action item lists and support completion of each item.
  • Coordinate with field operations to monitor materials delivered to site.
  • Work with corporate and field teams to support company safety and insurance requirements, protocols, and OSHA compliance.

Skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or a related discipline.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience with broad knowledge of construction management from preconstruction through closeout, including technical and design understanding.
  • Strong grasp of how different design disciplines coordinate with one another.
  • Experience sequencing construction phases and managing project flow.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, with the confidence to propose practical and creative solutions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented, self-driven, enthusiastic, and adaptable.
  • Solid business judgment and professional presence.
  • Comfortable working with a wide range of people in formal and informal business settings.
  • Ability to interpret architectural and consultant drawings, specifications, and details.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively under deadlines.
  • Computer proficiency, including MS Excel, MS Project, and industry tools such as BlueBeam, Procore, and Primavera P6.
  • Responsible stewardship of company assets.

Additional requirements

  • Must be willing to relocate to the project site for the full project duration.
  • Work hours may extend beyond a standard Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM schedule depending on project demands and reporting needs.
  • Must have the visual ability needed to perform the work.
  • Must be physically able to walk construction sites.
  • Strong sense of urgency is required.
  • Must be able to listen carefully and follow directions.
  • Commitment to continuous self-improvement and professional development is expected.
