Job description

Role Overview

PaceMate is hiring a technically minded Associate Application Engineer to join its AI, Data & Innovation team. The group is building internal applications, automation systems, AI-enabled workflows, integrations, and scalable data products that help improve healthcare operations and patient outcomes. This position is intended for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, learning how systems connect, and creating durable technical solutions rather than focusing only on dashboards or manual reporting.

This is a remote role, but candidates must live within the contiguous United States and work exclusively from there. The position is exempt and reports to the Senior Director of AI & BI.

What This Team Focuses On

Unlike a traditional BI function, this team is centered on innovation, application development, automation, and system improvement. AI is part of the everyday engineering process, and the team expects a builder who is curious, proactive, and comfortable using modern tooling to ship solutions faster and more effectively.

Key Work Areas

  • Support the buildout, enhancement, and upkeep of internal applications and automation systems.
  • Create APIs, backend services, integrations, and workflows that help business operations run more smoothly.
  • Improve reliability, performance, maintainability, and long-term scalability across applications.
  • Work with data models, queries, and cross-platform integrations involving MySQL, PostgreSQL, Salesforce, and internal systems.
  • Help deliver data-processing pipelines, monitoring, validation, and observability practices.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools and agentic workflows to speed up development, testing, debugging, and documentation.
  • Identify processes that can be automated and help prototype practical, scalable improvements.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams and leadership on innovation initiatives and technical solutions.

Experience and Skill Expectations

The ideal candidate brings strong problem-solving ability, a builder mindset, and a willingness to learn hands-on. You should be comfortable exploring how applications, databases, APIs, and automation flows work together. The role favors someone who enjoys debugging, improving systems, and working through technical issues with guidance when needed.

Hands-on experience using AI tools such as Claude CLI, Cursor, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, or similar platforms is important. Familiarity with prompt engineering and agentic development concepts is also expected, along with openness to newer tools and workflows.

On the technical side, the role calls for foundational experience in Python, PHP, or a similar language, plus working knowledge of SQL and relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL. Exposure to JavaScript and modern web application concepts is also useful. Experience building scripts, applications, or automation projects through work, school, bootcamps, internships, or personal work will be considered.

The team prefers candidates with 1 to 3 years of experience in software development, automation, data, IT, or similar technical work. Equivalent internship, project, bootcamp, or other hands-on experience can also count. Background in healthcare technology, operational systems, or data-heavy environments is considered an advantage.

Technical Environment

  • Programming languages: Python, PHP, JavaScript
  • Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL
  • Systems and platforms: Salesforce, APIs, integration frameworks, cloud tools, internal operational systems
  • AI and automation tools: Claude, Cursor, AI-assisted coding tools, agentic development workflows, automation frameworks
  • Preferred but not required: AWS, Azure, GCP, Databricks, Snowflake, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, HL7, FHIR, AI orchestration tools, frontend frameworks

Success in the Role

In the first 30 days, you should become familiar with PaceMate’s systems, architecture, and workflows, while contributing early fixes or automation improvements and showing comfort with AI-assisted development. By 90 days, you should be independently contributing to applications and automation efforts, helping reduce manual work, and delivering measurable gains in efficiency or performance. Over the first year, the expectation is that you grow into a trusted contributor across multiple systems while helping improve scalability, reliability, maintainability, and innovation speed.

Values and Team Culture

  • Impact-driven work that ultimately supports patient care and operational excellence.
  • A strong focus on innovation, experimentation, and modern engineering approaches.
  • Ownership of outcomes and long-term system health.
  • Practical thinking that prioritizes measurable business value.
  • Collaboration and shared problem-solving across the organization.

Physical and Work-From-Home Requirements

This role involves extended computer-based work. You will regularly remain at a workstation, use office equipment, communicate frequently by voice and video, and perform repetitive hand motions for programming and data entry. A dedicated private home office or separate room is required, along with reliable high-speed internet.

Candidates must reside and work only within the contiguous United States. You must be legally eligible to work in the United States. If you need to work from any location other than the address on file, IT approval is required in advance. Address changes or temporary work-location requests must be coordinated with IT or HR, and additional details are available in the company handbook.

Information Security and Travel Restrictions

If sensitive information is taken into a foreign country, it must either remain in your possession or be stored in a protected form such as encrypted external storage. Employees may not bring secret PaceMate information into another country without permission from Physical Security management.

Equal Opportunity and Job Scope

PaceMate is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity and inclusion. The company notes that this description covers the general nature and level of the work, but it is not a complete list of every responsibility, duty, or skill. Management may update or reassign duties as needed.
