Position Overview
The University of Georgia is hiring a Building Services Worker I to support the upkeep of campus buildings and surrounding areas in Athens, Georgia. This is a full-time, non-exempt role within the Facilities Management Division, and it is classified as an essential position with security access responsibilities.
About the University
The University of Georgia was founded in 1785 and is recognized as the birthplace of public higher education in the United States. As the state’s flagship university, it operates from its main campus in Athens and also serves students through campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton. The university employs thousands of faculty and staff and serves more than 41,000 students across 19 schools and colleges, including the School of Medicine. Its Facilities Management Division is the largest of the university’s seven divisions and includes more than 800 employees responsible for maintaining buildings, landscapes, and infrastructure.
Work Schedule and Employment Details
This role follows a Monday through Friday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some weekday work and occasional weekend or after-hours coverage may be needed depending on operational demands. On-call duty is optional. The position is benefits-eligible, full-time, and tied to the TRS retirement plan. The advertised annual salary is $34,500. The role is located in the Athens area, and the vacancy remains open until filled. The proposed start date is July 17, 2026.
Key Duties
The main function of this job is to help keep university facilities clean, safe, and presentable. Work includes sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, and other light floor-care tasks. The position also involves cleaning windows, seals, walls, furniture, and other fixtures; removing trash and recyclable materials; and sanitizing surfaces throughout classrooms, offices, restrooms, clinics, laboratories, recreation spaces, and breakrooms.
Additional responsibilities include stocking restroom supplies and maintaining janitorial closets, securing and unlocking buildings, and helping move, deliver, receive, and transport supplies and materials between university locations. The role may also require bodily fluid cleanup using a bloodborne pathogen kit, specialized viral or bacterial disinfection, and replacement of light bulbs from an 8-foot ladder. Other related cleaning and support tasks may be assigned as needed.
Physical and Work Expectations
This position requires frequent physical activity, including bending, squatting, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and reaching overhead. The worker must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push or pull custodial carts weighing up to 40 pounds. The job also involves extended walking across campus, climbing stairs, using elevators, and working from ladders up to 8 feet high.
Qualifications and Requirements
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates should be able to work the assigned shift and be available for Saturday, Sunday, or after-hours work when necessary. Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships are important. The role also requires the ability to understand and follow written and spoken English instructions for safety, training, and work-related communication. Cross-training may be expected.
Compliance, Checks, and Notices
Employment is subject to completion of a background investigation. This may include a criminal background check, verification of credentials and work history, reference checks, and, where applicable, a satisfactory credit check. A pre-employment drug test may also be required for positions with high-risk responsibilities. Because the role includes security access, the candidate must meet any related clearance requirements.

The university also follows the University System of Georgia’s core values of integrity, excellence, accountability, and respect, along with its policy supporting freedom of expression and academic freedom.
