Job description
Role overview
This full-time caretaker role supports schools across the Halton Region, including Acton, Burlington, Georgetown, Milton, and Oakville. The position follows a 12-month work year and is based onsite.
Compensation and schedule
The hourly wage is $24.27, with an additional 4% vacation pay. Pay at this rate applies after successful completion of a six-month probationary period. The standard schedule is Monday to Friday for 8.5 hours per day, with afternoon shifts running approximately from 3:00/3:30 pm to 11:30 pm/12:00 am. Day shifts may also be required during March Break, Professional Development Days, and the summer months.
What the role offers
Caretakers in this position help support the well-being of students and staff. The role typically provides full-time hours, structured training on the technical aspects of the job, and guidance from an Area Supervisor and other staff. There is also potential to progress from a casual role into a permanent caretaker position. Permanent caretakers receive guaranteed full-time hours, paid vacation, and a full benefits and pension package.
Core duties
- Carry out custodial and caretaker tasks across assigned school sites.
- Work mainly afternoon shifts after the school day ends, with occasional day-time coverage when required.
- Support the cleanliness, safety, and day-to-day upkeep of facilities.
- Adapt to different sites within the region as needed during a shift.
Qualifications and job requirements
Applicants should have completed high school, or have an equivalent mix of education and experience. The role calls for a safety-first mindset, familiarity with hazardous materials and MSDS information, and the ability to understand dilution ratios and mix cleaning products correctly. A valid driver’s licence and access to a dependable vehicle are required, since work may involve travel to multiple locations in the Halton region. Strong customer service skills, a collaborative approach, independence, problem-solving ability, quick learning, and clear communication are also important. Previous related experience is considered an advantage.
Physical and screening requirements
Candidates must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position. Shortlisted applicants will need to complete a post-offer screening assessment as a condition of employment to confirm they can safely carry out the essential responsibilities of the role.
Application and hiring details
Applications must be submitted through the board’s applicant system, and there is no cost to apply. Only applications submitted through that process will be reviewed. Support is available for applicants who need help with the application platform. Communication with shortlisted candidates will generally take place by email, so current contact information must be kept up to date. Preference for posted vacancies will first be given to qualified applicants from the employee group in which the vacancy exists.
Equity, accommodation, and wellness
The hiring process includes voluntary self-identification questions collected in line with Ontario human rights and anti-racism requirements. This information is used to support an inclusive and representative workforce and may be reviewed during the hiring process. The employer also notes that reasonable accommodation will be provided upon request for candidates with disabilities or other protected accommodation needs during recruitment and selection. The organization is committed to maintaining a respectful and healthy workplace.
