Role Overview
The State of Tennessee is hiring a full-time CDL Examiner in Jackson, TN, within the Department of Safety and Homeland Security. This role is responsible for evaluating commercial driver’s license applicants, verifying eligibility, collecting and processing fees, and issuing licenses. The position is at the working level and reports under general supervision.
Compensation
Monthly pay ranges from $3,229 to $4,041, which equals an annual salary of $38,748 to $48,492.

Key Duties
In this role, you will support CDL and driver’s license testing services, assist customers with application data, and help maintain accurate licensing records. You will also explain licensing rules, handle daily cash reconciliation, and ensure testing is completed according to state and federal standards.
- Train associate-level staff on CDL examiner duties and respond to position-related questions.
- Collect the details needed for CDL, driver’s license, permit, and related applications, then enter the information into the system accurately and within required timelines.
- Administer commercial and non-commercial knowledge tests, road tests, vision screenings, and other required testing steps; photograph applicants and record outcomes.
- Explain licensing laws, office procedures, fees, hours, and application steps to the public.
- Count cash at the start and end of shifts, produce receipt reports, identify variances, and reconcile daily office revenue.
- Inspect vehicles for safe operation and assess applicants’ driving behavior against traffic laws and road safety expectations.
- Update licensing records, enter biographical details in the state system, and verify all applicant information for accuracy.
- Maintain at least 10 hours of CDL knowledge and road testing annually to remain compliant with applicable state and federal requirements.
Qualifications
Applicants must have an education level equivalent to high school graduation. A criminal background check is required, and candidates may need to disclose criminal history to be considered.
- Complete a background clearance application, including fingerprint-based and name-based criminal history checks.
- Never have been convicted, or found not guilty by reason of insanity, of any permanent disqualifying offense under 49 CFR 1572.103(a).
- Not have been convicted, or found not guilty by reason of insanity, of any interim disqualifying offense under 49 CFR 1572.103(b) within the 7 years before applying.
- Must not have been released from incarceration within the 5 years before applying for any interim disqualifying offense under 49 CFR 1572.103(b).
- Must not be under warrant for a felony listed in 49 CFR 1572.103(a) or 1572.103(b).
- Pass a pre-employment physical exam after receiving an offer.
- Hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license, or be able to obtain one before appointment.
Additional Requirements and Conditions
Candidates who may perform driving duties for the state must meet Tennessee driver standards, including possession of a valid driver’s license. Over the last five years, the driving record should not show DUI, reckless driving, a suspension for moving violations, or more than four moving violations.
