Job description

Role overview

The Institute of Cancer Research is looking for a Clinical Trial Assistant to join its Drug Development Unit in Sutton. This is a short fixed-term position lasting 3 months and is offered on a zero-hours basis, with working time of up to 20 hours per week. The role is based fully on site in Sutton and is not suitable for hybrid working.

About the team

The Drug Development Unit within the Division of Clinical Studies, working alongside The Royal Marsden Hospital, is a fast-growing Phase 1 clinical trials centre focused on developing new cancer treatments in early-stage studies. The unit combines laboratory and clinical expertise to run first-in-human trials and supports both investigator-initiated and sponsored research.

The team contributes to the rapid advancement of anti-cancer medicines developed internally, through CRUK researchers, or with industry partners, and has played a role in the development of many well-known cancer therapies. The unit is connected to major national and international research collaborations and is part of several leading cancer research networks.

What the role involves

In this position, you will provide administrative support to the clinical trials team and help with data collection, data collation, quality assurance checks, pharmacy document handling, and upkeep of study files in line with ICH-GCP requirements. You will also gain practical exposure to early-phase trial processes, trial management, and the translational aspects of cancer drug development.

The role also includes attending multidisciplinary team meetings and building an understanding of the decision-making and workflows involved in complex clinical trials. This is a strong opportunity for someone looking to build a career in clinical research.

Working pattern and contract details

Contract length: 3 months fixed term.

Working hours: zero-hour contract, with up to 20 hours per week.

Location: Sutton, with no hybrid working option.

Closing date: 23 June 2026.

Candidate profile

The opportunity is open to recent graduates and university students seeking summer placement work. A background in science or some knowledge of clinical trials would be useful, but it is not essential. You should be comfortable using computers and able to plan and manage your work and time effectively within a busy clinical environment.

Additional information

Because applications may be closed early once enough interest has been received, candidates are encouraged to submit a CV and supporting statement as soon as possible.

The Institute of Cancer Research offers staff benefits and supports applicants from overseas. The organisation is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and experiences.

The institute emphasises that a strict checklist of qualifications should not discourage interested candidates from applying, especially if they are enthusiastic about the role and bring valuable personal or academic experience.
