About the Organization
Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie has supported children across the Hudson Valley for more than 175 years, with a mission centered on helping children and families reach the best possible health and well-being. The organization is hiring a Custodian for its Support Services Department.
Role Summary
This position is focused on maintaining cleanliness and sanitation across all agency facilities, while also lending support for special events when needed.
Key Duties
- Complete required training in line with Children’s Home standards and applicable NYS Justice Center, OCFS, ORR, and OMH rules.
- Follow agency policies and procedures as outlined in the Direct Care Manual, Employee Handbook, and Risk Management Manual.
- Inspect assigned building areas on a set schedule and ensure they remain clean and operational each day.
- Dust and vacuum individual spaces every week.
- Clean bathrooms and any food-service areas on a daily basis.
- Maintain cleanliness of public areas every day.
- Carry out minor repairs that do not require the Buildings & Grounds Supervisor’s support.
- Help prepare for special events, including setup and cleanup.
- Deliver housekeeping supplies to cottages.
- Support other departments as needed, such as helping move furniture or assisting in the kitchen.
- Use required personal protective equipment for different tasks.
- Attend all mandatory training, including New Hire Orientation, Sanctuary, TCI certification, and CPR/First Aid certification.
- Perform other assigned duties as needed.
Schedule
The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with Saturday and Sunday off.

Working Conditions
- This role requires regular physical activity such as bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking between campus locations.
- The job involves lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Frequent handling of approved cleaning and sanitizing chemicals is part of the work.
- The custodian must be able to operate equipment such as a vacuum cleaner, floor buffer, iMOP, and kitchen equipment safely.
- Operating an agency vehicle safely and in compliance with NYS motor vehicle law is required.

Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid New York State driver license in good standing, as determined by the agency.
- Prior experience in housekeeping or custodial work.
- Ability to complete and pass a pre-employment physical, PPD test, and drug screen, as well as annual physical and PPD testing.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 1 year of experience in a congregate care setting.
- Relevant certifications or licensure.
