Job description

About ClimateAi

ClimateAi is focused on acting now to build resilience against climate volatility. The company develops technology that helps people and industries make quicker, better decisions when weather patterns shift. Its broader mission is to help climate-proof the global economy and work toward eliminating loss of life, livelihoods, and nature. Users such as farmers, supply chain professionals, risk teams, and policymakers rely on ClimateAi’s forecasts and insights to prepare in advance and respond on time. In 2022, TIME Magazine named ClimateAi among its Best Inventions, recognizing its climate resilience technology.

Role overview

The Data Engineer I position is a hands-on role supporting the systems behind ClimateAi’s climate models, forecasts, and customer-facing products. You will develop and support data pipelines that convert raw climate, weather, and agronomic inputs into dependable datasets used by Data Science, ML Engineering, and Product teams. This is an early-career opportunity for a strong Computer Science or Computer Engineering graduate who wants to grow into a capable data engineer. You will learn through close collaboration with senior engineers and a manager who provides regular feedback, code reviews, design input, and pairing on production systems from the start.

Work model and location

This role follows a hybrid schedule with 3 in-person days each week at one of the core offices in San Francisco, CA or Boston, MA, and 2 remote days.

Responsibilities

  • Develop production-ready Python and SQL logic to collect, clean, and convert climate, weather, and agronomic data from many third-party sources.
  • Build and support scalable pipelines for scheduled and event-based data processing, while working within established engineering patterns.
  • Help integrate new data services across AWS and connect them end to end with support from senior team members.
  • Take part in architecture conversations, code reviews, and planning sessions.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation for owned pipelines, datasets, sources, and dependencies.
  • Stay curious, ask thoughtful questions, and actively share what you learn.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline; recent graduates are welcome.
  • Strong programming fundamentals in Python and practical SQL knowledge.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure through academic work, internships, or personal projects.
  • Understanding of common data types, formats including CSV, Parquet, and JSON, and standard data ingestion approaches.
  • Good troubleshooting skills, with a careful and methodical approach to debugging and reading others’ code.
  • Open to feedback and motivated to improve through code reviews and design critiques.
  • Bonus experience includes internships, co-ops, or open-source work on data pipelines in real or production-like settings.
  • Additional bonus experience includes coursework or projects in distributed systems, machine learning, or climate/environmental science.
  • Extra consideration for familiarity with pipeline scheduling and orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, Dagster, Argo Workflows, or similar systems.

Compensation

The base pay range for US-based employees is USD 115,000 to USD 145,000 annually, plus equity aligned with experience and company stage. The final offer may cover different internal career levels and will be refined during interviews based on experience, qualifications, business needs, and US location.

Benefits and perks

  • Competitive salary with equity participation.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Annual learning budget.
  • Unlimited PTO policy with minimum time-off requirements.
  • Flexible working hours on many teams.
  • An inclusive environment supported by employee resource groups.
  • Opportunity to work with smart, curious, and passionate teammates on a mission-driven product.

Culture

ClimateAi emphasizes trust, transparency, collaboration, adaptability, and continuous learning. Feedback is treated as a tool for personal and professional growth, and the team values strong communication, mutual support, and a willingness to keep improving while pushing innovation forward.

Equal opportunity

ClimateAi is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity in the workplace. The company is committed to maintaining an inclusive environment for all employees.
