Job description

Company Overview

Public Storage began with its first self-storage site in 1972 and has since become the largest owner and operator in the self-storage industry worldwide. The company operates thousands of locations across the U.S. and Europe and manages more than 170 million net rentable square feet of real estate, making it one of the largest landlords as well. It has earned recognition from the Great Place to Work Institute, with employees highlighting strong career growth, a positive work culture, and a high level of diversity and inclusion. Public Storage is also part of the S&P 500 and FT Global 500, and its common and preferred shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

The organization is looking to strengthen its data science capability to support a consistent, engaging brand and to deliver reliable analytical and machine learning solutions at scale.

Role Summary

The Data Scientist will partner across the business to turn complex, loosely defined problems into practical analytical and machine learning solutions. The role calls for strong technical depth in Python, SQL, statistics, and modern ML methods, along with the ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively across teams.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate ideas, challenges, and recommendations clearly in both spoken and written form.
  • Build credibility as a trusted data science partner across all levels of the organization.
  • Develop and launch machine learning models using both structured and unstructured data.
  • Convert ambiguous business questions into well-defined analytical work with documented assumptions and trade-offs.
  • Write maintainable, production-ready Python and SQL code for shared codebases.
  • Work with data engineering teams on pipeline design, feature stores, and deployment approaches.
  • Use large language models and modern AI tools where they add value, while applying sound judgment.
  • Coach analysts and junior data scientists through reviews, discussions, and hands-on collaboration.
  • Maintain model documentation, version control, and supporting knowledge assets in tools such as Confluence and GitHub.
  • Track deployed model performance, identify drift or decline, and refresh models before issues become reactive.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in a STEM discipline such as statistics, economics, computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, or a related area.
  • Strong real-world expertise in SQL and Python.
  • Deep working knowledge of verbal communication and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Solid applied statistics background, including familiarity with both frequentist and Bayesian approaches.
  • Experience with current machine learning tools such as scikit-learn, XGBoost, PyTorch, or similar frameworks.
  • Hands-on exposure to experiment tracking tools such as MLflow or Weights & Biases.
  • Understanding of MLOps practices, including model versioning, registries, scheduled retraining, and monitoring.
  • Comfort using Git-based workflows and participating in code reviews.
  • Familiarity with dbt or workflow orchestration tools such as Airflow or Prefect.
  • Experience working with web behavior data and customer lifecycle models such as churn, propensity, and lifetime value.
  • A Ph.D. in a quantitative field is considered an advantage.
  • Equivalent experience may be considered, including at least 5 years in a production data science role.
  • Alternatively, 6 or more years of experience as an individual contributor or leader may substitute for formal education.
  • Demonstrated success delivering models that produced measurable business impact.

Work Arrangement
