Job description

Role overview

The Design Co-ordinator will be central to the smooth delivery of civil engineering projects. From the point of contract award through to project close-out, this role ensures the design process is properly managed, aligned with the programme, reviewed by the project team, approved by the client, and supported through construction and handover.

Key responsibilities

  • Steer the design process from contract award through to final completion.
  • Issue clear instructions to designers, track information flow, and monitor progress against deadlines.
  • Make sure design packages are coordinated and signed off ahead of the construction sequence.
  • Check design submissions for compliance, buildability, financial sense, and temporary works considerations.
  • Help manage risk, opportunities, and value engineering initiatives.
  • Identify technical and design issues, then work with the wider team to agree workable solutions.
  • Reduce exposure to defects, hazards, and non-compliance risks for the contractor.
  • Advise on procedures and workflows for producing formalised information.
  • Support the project’s BIM requirements and assist the BIM Manager where needed.
  • Help the client meet their CDM duties and responsibilities during design development.

Required experience and knowledge

The ideal candidate will have proven experience coordinating design on civil engineering projects, along with a strong grasp of current construction methods, plant, and equipment. A broad understanding of civil engineering project delivery is essential, as is confidence working with contract forms such as NEC and JCT. The role also calls for advanced capability across the Microsoft Office suite, Asta Powerproject, and AutoCAD, plus solid experience using document control systems. Familiarity with MEICA integration in civil design and active BIM use on live projects is also expected. A degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required.
