Job description

About the Role

Marolina Outdoor is seeking an early-career Design I to join its Design Department in Charleston, South Carolina. This position is strictly based on-site and is not available as hybrid or remote work. The role supports the creation of performance apparel for fishing and hunting across the Huk and Nomad brands, with work spanning concept development through production handoff.

This opportunity is well suited to a designer who wants to build experience in technical outdoor apparel within a collaborative, fast-moving product environment. The position reports to a Senior Designer and also includes important coordination and administrative responsibilities that help keep the seasonal design workflow organized and on schedule.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will contribute to the seasonal development of fishing and hunting apparel, helping with creative work as well as day-to-day design operations. Responsibilities include developing product concepts, preparing technical documentation, supporting sampling, and working with cross-functional partners to move projects forward.

Design and Product Development

  • Support the design of performance apparel for fishing and hunting categories, including base layers, mid layers, outerwear, and technical bottoms.
  • Help build seasonal line plans and create mood boards, color direction, graphics, and print concepts alongside the Senior Designer.
  • Produce detailed tech packs, flat sketches, and construction notes that are ready for factory use.
  • Work with the design team to evaluate and choose fabrics, trims, and hardware suited to the intended performance use.
  • Take part in fit sessions and proto reviews, record feedback, and communicate revisions to vendors and internal teams.
  • Track market direction in both performance and lifestyle outdoor categories, including competitor review and new performance technology trends.

Administrative and Operational Support

  • Keep product development records, design libraries, and sample tracking information accurate and current.
  • Organize CADs, tech packs, colorways, and spec sheets within shared systems such as PLM and Adobe Creative Cloud libraries.
  • Coordinate sample requests, monitor sample progress, and support vendor communication around timing under the guidance of the Senior Designer.
  • Prepare presentation decks and line review materials for internal meetings and buying sessions.
  • Help manage the design calendar by scheduling and documenting milestones so deadlines are met.
  • Support communication with merchandising, product development, and sourcing teams as needed.

Requirements

Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Apparel Design, Textile Design, or a similar discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The ideal applicant will bring 0–2 years of apparel design experience, with internship experience in performance or outdoor apparel considered highly valuable.

Strong knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is required, while InDesign is a plus. Familiarity with PLM or other product management tools is expected, along with exposure to AI-enabled design workflows and tech pack development. A working understanding of garment construction, pattern-making basics, and performance fabrics is important.

The role also calls for strong organization, attention to detail, and the ability to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines. Clear written and verbal communication skills are needed, along with comfort working in a team-based environment. A basic understanding of the retail and wholesale product development calendar is also important.

Competencies and Attributes

  • A creative mindset paired with solid execution and follow-through.
  • A consumer-focused approach, especially with an understanding of the practical needs of hunting and fishing environments.
  • Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and grow in a mentor-supported setting.
  • Flexibility in a fast-changing product environment with shifting priorities and tight timelines.
  • Commitment to accuracy and quality in both creative work and administrative tasks.
  • Personal interest in fishing, hunting, or other outdoor activities is a strong advantage.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Retirement options including 401(k) and IRA, with company matching up to 6%.
  • Basic, voluntary, and AD&D life insurance.
  • Paid time off including vacation, sick leave, and public holidays.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • Training and development opportunities.
