Job description

Role overview

Project HOPE Namibia is hiring a full-time local employee for a one-year assignment with the possibility of renewal. The role is based in Tamale, Ghana, and relocation support will not be provided. The selected person will report to the Administrative Officer and support the Global Health division.

About the organization

Project HOPE is an international NGO with a long history of responding to major global health needs. Over six decades, the organization has supported millions of patients, delivered medicines valued at more than $3 billion to healthcare partners, helped establish many health programs, and responded to humanitarian emergencies around the world.

Program background

The role sits within the US Government-funded Ghana Integrated Health Partnership (IHP). The initiative supports Ghana’s efforts to reduce preventable deaths among mothers, newborns, and children, including stillbirths, while improving overall health outcomes by 2030. It focuses on local capacity building and the delivery of evidence-based maternal, child health, malaria, nutrition, and global health security services in northern Ghana.

Key responsibilities

The driver/office clerk will be responsible for moving staff, materials, and supplies safely and efficiently across field locations, including areas with limited infrastructure or difficult travel conditions. The position also includes banking support and other administrative support for the Ghana office.

  • Transport staff safely to and from offices, meetings, field sites, and partner organizations while following assigned routes and schedules.
  • Move equipment, medical supplies, food, and other items between headquarters, project locations, and beneficiaries.
  • Handle delicate or sensitive cargo, such as medical equipment, documents, and valuable supplies, with care and accountability.
  • Inspect vehicles regularly by checking critical parts such as the engine, brakes, tires, and oil.
  • Carry out routine upkeep, including washing and cleaning the vehicle and ensuring it contains essential items like a first aid kit, spare tire, and tools.
  • Report breakdowns, damage, or accidents promptly to the relevant supervisor for action.
  • Monitor fuel usage, refuel vehicles as needed, and maintain proper fuel records and accountability.
  • Plan practical routes for travel while considering road conditions, weather, security concerns, and access limitations.
  • Drive responsibly in line with local traffic laws and safe driving standards.
  • Stay alert to security risks and report incidents, roadblocks, or other hazards to the appropriate authorities.
  • Respond to emergencies by providing basic first aid when possible or arranging transport to the nearest medical facility.
  • Maintain an accurate logbook covering trips, destinations, purposes, mileage, fuel use, and incidents.
  • Prepare and submit timely reports on vehicle use, maintenance needs, and transportation-related issues.
  • Keep driver’s licenses and required permits current, including any special authorizations needed for border crossings or heavy vehicles.
  • Ensure the vehicle meets health and safety requirements, including seatbelt use and the presence of safety equipment such as a fire extinguisher and first aid kit.
  • Use defensive driving practices, especially on challenging or high-risk routes.
  • Support the Finance, Administration, Procurement, and Human Resources teams with clerical, procedural, administrative, and operational tasks as needed.
  • Carry out any other related duties assigned.

Qualifications and experience

  • Completion of WASSCE, SSCE, or another relevant professional qualification.
  • Between 5 and 10 years of driving experience, including long-distance travel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a consistently professional manner.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit, donor-funded project, or the Government of Ghana is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of USAID operations or international NGO environments is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English, both spoken and written.

Physical and working conditions

The job requires mobility within an office setting and the ability to use standard office equipment. The employee must also be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Work may involve exposure to local weather conditions, a standard office setting with low noise levels, and travel or assignments in hardship environments.

Application review note

Because the organization receives a large number of applications, only candidates who meet the required experience and qualifications will be considered.

Code of conduct

The organization expects all staff to treat one another with respect and to actively help prevent sexual exploitation, abuse, trafficking in persons, conflicts of interest, fraud, corruption, discrimination, and harassment. The goal is to maintain a culture of respect, integrity, accountability, and transparency.
