Job description
About the role
Northpower is seeking an experienced drone pilot to carry out advanced inspection work across essential national infrastructure. Working within the company’s CAA Part 102 operating framework, you will support RPAS missions across New Zealand’s transmission network, using DJI Matrice RTK aircraft in demanding environments where precision, safety, and aviation best practice are critical.
This position offers varied work locations, regular travel, and the chance to build capability in more advanced RPAS operations while contributing to the reliability of power supply across Aotearoa.
Key responsibilities
- Perform detailed RPAS inspection flights using DJI RTK platforms over transmission lines, towers, substations, and other required sites.
- Work alongside an observer as part of a two-person crew to ensure operations are safe and compliant under Northpower’s CAA Part 102 certificate.
- Assist with mission preparation, hazard analysis, and safety briefings through tools such as Fly Freely, AirShare, and Flight Advisor.
- Collect high-quality imagery and support after-flight data handling so deliverables meet client expectations.
- Keep flight logs, pilot records, and Operational Competency Assessment currency up to date.
- Partner with the Chief Pilot and the wider RPAS team to improve inspection methods, including authorised EVLOS and BVLOS work.
- Travel throughout New Zealand to complete inspection assignments on critical infrastructure.
What we’re looking for
- A current CAA New Zealand Part 101 certification at minimum, with Part 102 qualification preferred and an Operational Competency Assessment completed within the last 12 months.
- Demonstrated RPAS experience in complex environments, ideally around transmission or distribution assets.
- Solid understanding of airspace requirements, including NOTAMs, ATC coordination, and operations in controlled and uncontrolled airspace.
- Comfortable working in a pilot-and-observer setup using clear communication and standard aviation phraseology.
- Experience with digital flight planning platforms such as FlyFreely, AirShare, and Flight Advisor.
- A full, clean NZ Class 1 driver’s licence and the flexibility to travel nationwide.
- Strong commitment to risk controls, tailgate processes, and site safety procedures.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- General aviation background such as a PPL, AROC, or other crewed aviation experience is highly advantageous.
What Northpower offers
- A safety-led, inclusive, people-focused culture with wellbeing support through EAP and the Kaitiaki peer support network.
- Competitive pay with options to tailor benefits through additional leave and increased employer KiwiSaver contributions.
- Life insurance plus preventative health initiatives, including annual flu vaccinations and MoleMap checks.
- Discounted group medical cover and health and fitness programmes, including Fitness Passport.
- Fuel discounts and retail savings with partners such as Boost, PB Tech, and Specsavers.
- Learning and development opportunities with clear pathways to progress or specialise.
- A welcoming, family-friendly workplace where individuality is valued.
