Role overview

An environmental consultancy in the Portsmouth area is seeking an eager and driven Ecologist to join its expanding team. The position involves contributing to a broad mix of ecological work across the UK, with opportunities to support projects in several sectors.

The role centres on carrying out habitat and protected species surveys, producing ecological assessments, reviewing potential impacts, and writing technical reports. You will work closely with experienced environmental specialists and help clients move through planning and development requirements while supporting practical, sustainable ecological outcomes.

What you will be doing

  • Conduct field-based ecological surveys, including habitat checks and protected species surveys.
  • Draft technical documents such as Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments, and Biodiversity Net Gain assessments.
  • Support project delivery and maintain effective communication with clients.
  • Assist with ecological mitigation, enhancement, and monitoring activities.
  • Ensure outputs meet high technical standards and comply with current legislation and recognised best practice.

Candidate profile

The ideal applicant will hold a degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a similar subject. Previous experience in ecological surveying and report preparation is required, along with a solid understanding of UK wildlife law and planning policy. Strong communication and organisational abilities are important.

Membership of a relevant professional organisation is preferred. A full UK driving licence is also advantageous.
