Job description

Company Overview

NagpurTimes.com is an investigative newsroom that is part of a worldwide media network with more than 1,000 investigative publications and over 25,000 media properties founded by Ekalavya Hansaj. The outlet is focused on journalism that holds power accountable and aims to influence public policy through consequential reporting.

The newsroom covers reform, governance, political accountability, corruption, judicial processes, and social justice, with deep-dive reporting on people, institutions, and developments that affect decision-makers. Its reporting approach combines source-based journalism, public-record research, and legal review, and its work is often relied on by policymakers, litigators, civil-society leaders, and senior business executives.

With coverage spanning India, the United States, and other global jurisdictions, the organization concentrates on stories that surface risk, support reform, and generate measurable impact. As part of a large investigative network, it also provides targeted placement opportunities across niche and mainstream channels while maintaining strict editorial standards.

Role Summary

The Editor in Chief will lead the full editorial function from Nagpur, with a hybrid working setup that allows some work-from-home flexibility. This is a full-time position responsible for directing investigative journalism across multiple beats and regions.

The role involves setting editorial direction, managing planning and commissioning, reviewing story pitches, and guiding coverage priorities. The Editor in Chief will ensure every publication meets high standards for verification, legal scrutiny, ethics, structure, and narrative quality.

The position also requires close coordination with agency, advertising, and contributor program teams so editorial goals stay aligned with organizational objectives without affecting independence or editorial integrity. In addition, the person will represent the newsroom publicly, strengthen contributor and partner relationships, and mentor the team toward high-impact accountability journalism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set the editorial vision and steer the newsroom’s overall content strategy.
  • Plan, commission, and supervise investigative projects across multiple beats and jurisdictions.
  • Review pitches, prioritize stories, and manage newsroom workflows.
  • Oversee fact-checking, legal review, and ethical compliance for all published work.
  • Edit long-form investigations and features, improving structure, clarity, and narrative flow.
  • Work with agency, advertising, and contributor teams while protecting editorial independence.
  • Represent the newsroom in public-facing settings and build relationships with contributors and partners.
  • Coach and mentor editors and reporters to help them grow professionally.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven leadership experience in editorial planning, newsroom management, and building story pipelines.
  • Strong background in investigative journalism, including source development, document review, data analysis, and oversight of legal and ethical checks.
  • Excellent editing and writing ability with experience handling long-form features, complex investigations, and policy-oriented narratives.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams such as agency, advertising, and partnerships while preserving editorial autonomy.
  • Ability to mentor journalists at different stages of experience and provide useful, actionable feedback.
  • Working knowledge of governance, public policy, political accountability, judicial processes, and social justice, preferably in India and/or international contexts.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills in a fast-moving, mission-driven environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Policy, or a related discipline; an advanced degree or equivalent is also acceptable.

Important Note

This opportunity is for the NagpurTimes.com online investigative outlet owned by Ekalavya Hansaj. It is separate from the Nagpur Times print publication owned by Times Internet, and the two should not be confused as part of the same organization. The online outlet focuses strictly on investigative reporting.
