Job description
Overview
This role is designed for people who want practical exposure to environmental conservation work. It is unpaid and combines field experience with mentoring, structured learning, and opportunities to build both technical and people-focused capabilities.
Who this internship is for
The program is aimed at three kinds of applicants: students who must complete a hands-on placement as part of their studies; people who want to learn a broad range of biodiversity conservation activities, from invertebrates through to birds and bats; and those looking to strengthen leadership and planning abilities.
The internship runs for 10–12 weeks between November and the end of March. It is recognized by universities in Europe, the UK, and North America as compulsory practical placement credit.
How the program works
At the start of the internship, each participant works with a mentor to create a development plan focused on the skills they want to gain or improve. A schedule is then agreed and followed through the remainder of the placement. Interns also join the organization’s volunteer program and receive tailored training and mentoring based on their goals.
Both hands-on field skills and soft skills can be taught, including leadership and teamwork.
Key activities
- Supporting kiwi population monitoring through night listening, trail cameras, and VHF telemetry
- Conducting passive acoustic surveys for bats
- Assisting with giant snail surveys
- Helping with small mammal monitoring
- Checking predator traps
- Carrying out track cutting and track maintenance
Important notes
This internship involves a higher level of responsibility and commitment than a volunteer role and will require considerably more effort. In return, participants gain deeper learning, stronger skill development, and work experience similar to what is expected in a professional setting.
The usual start date is the first or third Monday of the month between November and February. A minimum commitment of 10 weeks is required.
