Job description

Position Summary

The Estimator is responsible for creating take-offs and bid support for construction projects, helping shape proposals and supporting the buy-out phase.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Examine blueprints and supporting project documents to calculate labor, material, time, and cost estimates.
  • Interpret contract paperwork for the relevant project divisions.
  • Request and gather pricing from subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Assess subcontractor bids to confirm scope coverage, completeness, and accuracy.
  • Complete detailed quantity surveys and take-offs.
  • Review prior estimate and subcontract quotation files to support new bids.
  • Compare KPI information to assist with bid preparation.
  • Build spreadsheets and coordinate with the estimating team for bid day activities.
  • Prepare and submit large-scale, multimillion-dollar bids for company services.
  • Develop cost estimates and schedules.
  • Identify priority issues and prepare reports for senior leaders and clients.
  • Organize and archive bid documents after bid day for estimate and quote records.
  • Check awarded contracts against bid documents to ensure alignment.
  • Schedule and lead handoff meetings with management to review budget and the bid plan for project execution.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of experience in construction estimating.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Working knowledge of plan reading and interpretation.
  • Experience reviewing contract documents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Capability to handle several priorities at once and work to deadlines.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions

  • Work is generally performed indoors, with some onsite and outdoor involvement.
  • The role involves frequent sitting, standing, walking, reading, writing, and computer use.
  • Exposure to extreme weather, including very hot and very cold conditions, may occur.
  • There may be exposure to loud noise.
