Job description
Role overview
This is a permanent full-time position of 37.5 hours per week based in Cardiff, within the South West & Wales region. The role focuses on work for the Cardiff Council and Vale of Glamorgan Council New Housing Partnership from the Cardiff office.
Reporting to the Managing Estimator, you will prepare land and tender appraisals promptly while aiming to maximise land value, development margin, and return on capital employed. You will be part of a growing pre-construction team that provides commercial input to estimating activities across the region and builds strong working relationships with internal delivery teams and supply-chain partners.
What the role involves
- Assist the estimating team in identifying risk and applying commercial standing instructions.
- Help ensure commercial opportunities are fully captured and that the company’s interests remain protected.
- Produce accurate and timely estimates and pre-acquisition studies, making full use of the housebuilder appraisal system.
- Prepare subcontract enquiries on time for bid submissions where needed, and resolve outstanding issues before land appraisal sign-off.
- Visit sites for new prospects and live developments to better understand construction methods and site conditions.
What we are looking for
Applicants should have prior experience in a comparable estimating role and the commercial awareness needed to improve value recovery, control costs, and manage cash effectively. Strong Excel knowledge is required, along with the ability to build and interpret financial reports. A sound understanding of subcontract orders and buying processes is also important. Previous use of estimating software and strong IT skills would be beneficial, though not essential.
