Job description

Role overview

Amey is hiring an on-site General Handy Person for HMP Onley. This position supports the maintenance of secure prison facilities by helping ensure work is completed safely, compliantly, and on time.

Working pattern and pay

The role is based on 39 hours each week, spread across seven days because weekend shifts are part of the rota. You will be expected to work 1 in 3 weekends, and this attracts an extra allowance of 15% on basic salary. The annual salary is £27,426.

What the job involves

The General Handy Person is a key member of the maintenance function within the prison environment, supporting both planned and reactive tasks in a safe and timely way.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside the maintenance team to complete general repair and upkeep tasks, and support specialist trades on site.
  • Carry out a range of facilities management duties as assigned by the team manager.
  • Help maintain strong health and safety standards across the contract.
  • Support local and wider net-zero carbon initiatives and contribute to sustainability objectives.

Requirements

  • Practical background in DIY or general building maintenance.
  • Relevant CITB qualification or an equivalent certification.
  • Willingness to develop new abilities and take on additional skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Prison Security Clearance will be required, and Amey will assist with this process.
