Job description

Role Overview

This full-time on-site housekeeping position based in Calgary, Alberta supports the cleanliness, safety, and comfort of shared spaces and resident rooms in a long-term care environment. The role calls for a service-oriented attitude, strong time management, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Key Duties

  • Keep public and shared areas clean throughout the day, including the lobby, restrooms, drinking fountains, and floors.
  • Ensure resident rooms and bathrooms are maintained in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Wipe and keep handrails free of dirt and debris.
  • Remove dust, grime, and food residue from walls, mirrors, windows, light fixtures, towel bars, and towel dispensers.
  • Empty waste bins, replace liners, and dispose of trash properly.
  • Sweep and mop floors as needed.
  • Follow safety procedures while cleaning, including placing caution signs and storing cleaning chemicals and supplies where residents cannot access them.
  • Use housekeeping supplies and equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions and in a safe manner.
  • Keep housekeeping carts, equipment, and storage areas orderly, clean, and sanitary.
  • Report resident safety concerns or issues immediately to the Director of Housekeeping, Administrator, or Director of Nursing.
  • Inform the Director of Housekeeping when supplies need to be restocked.

Skills and Work Style

This role requires strong customer service, a positive approach, the ability to manage time well, and comfort working independently or collaboratively. The job also calls for basic reading, understanding of instructions, practical problem-solving, and simple arithmetic.

Qualification Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Prior experience in a long-term care facility is preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand procedure manuals, written directions, and instructions.
  • Basic math ability, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to interpret written, verbal, diagram-based, and schedule-based instructions.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Physical and Work Environment

The position involves regular sitting, kneeling, standing, walking, and communicating, as well as reading and hearing. The employee may occasionally need to lift or move up to 25 pounds. Daily use of housekeeping tools and some office equipment such as a copier/scanner/fax, telephone, and calculator may also be required. The work environment is generally low to moderate in smell and noise.
