Job description
Role overview
This position is responsible for reviewing and investigating complex indirect tax legal matters, preparing related legal papers, representing the authority before courts and other forums, and negotiating settlements while protecting the organization’s legal interests and standing.
Strategic and planning responsibilities
- Translate the authority’s indirect tax litigation strategy and objectives into day-to-day execution.
- Contribute ideas for future projects needed to meet upcoming litigation demands.
- Support planning efforts that align the litigation function with the wider strategic direction of the organization.
Budget management
- Take part in the annual budgeting process for the litigation function.
- Run the function in a cost-conscious way, staying within budget and reporting progress as well as any challenges accurately.
Handling complex cases
- Review indirect tax legal cases with relevant sectors and divisions to understand the requirements and possible implications.
- Collect supporting records and coordinate with internal stakeholders to investigate alleged violations when needed.
- Draft claims, responses, counter-arguments, warning notices, and other legal correspondence to safeguard the authority’s rights and reputation.
- Prepare studies and recommendations to reduce repeated violations and determine preventive measures.
- Strengthen awareness of legal issues, risks, and responsibilities through guidance, communication, and training.
- Apply suitable legal policies and practices to manage indirect tax obligations and legal exposure effectively.
- Offer timely and accurate guidance across the organization on both routine and complex indirect tax legal matters.
Court and dispute representation
- Represent the authority in cases brought for or against it before courts, committees, and government bodies.
- Handle settlement discussions with employees and external parties involved in disputes, excluding matters tied to audit and collection.
- Work with external legal specialists where needed on committee-related cases.
- Prepare settlement documentation and oversee the execution of legal clauses.
People management
- Contribute to identifying and hiring key talent.
- Coach, guide, and support direct team members so they can perform according to established policies and procedures.
- Deliver on-the-job training and provide ongoing feedback to direct reports.
Education and experience
A bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies, or an equivalent qualification, is required. A master’s degree in Legal Studies, or an equivalent qualification, is preferred. The role calls for up to 7 years of relevant experience, including a preferred 2 years at managerial level.
