Job description

Role overview

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is looking for a Journey Manager to take ownership of complex customer-journey challenges across the Northland transport network. Based in Whangarei, this permanent full-time role focuses on the Northland region while also contributing to a wider national team spread across New Zealand.

The position is centred on shaping how transport system decisions affect road users, working beyond routine operational tasks to support a coordinated approach to planned works and to improve the customer experience. You will help ensure the needs of customers and the commercial sector remain central to decision-making while balancing delivery priorities with travel impacts.

The advertised base salary for this role is $133,632 to $141,056, depending on the knowledge and experience you bring.

Key focus areas

  • Contribute to improvements in the Northland transport network with a clear customer focus.
  • Work closely with local Civil Defence Emergency Management teams to manage network impacts during emergencies.
  • Build and maintain influential relationships with stakeholders so customer and business interests are reflected in decisions.
  • Lead collaboration with the local team to improve the overall functioning of the transport system.
  • Help ensure the region is ready to respond effectively to local and national emergency events.

What you will do

You will lead work on complex issues affecting journeys across Northland, bringing together multiple parties to create practical, joined-up solutions. This involves developing strong partnerships with community stakeholders, keeping them informed, and aligning plans so that operational delivery and customer impact are carefully balanced.

You will also play a part in strengthening how the transport system operates across the region by using your problem-solving skills, technical understanding, and facilitation ability to turn complex information into workable outcomes. In addition, you will contribute to emergency preparedness and response across both local and national contexts.

About you

To succeed in this role, you should bring strong experience in managing stakeholders and influencing outcomes. You will need to be comfortable working through complicated situations, facilitating discussions, and converting technical detail into clear, practical action.

Experience in emergency management or other high-pressure decision-making environments will be valuable. A genuine interest in the Northland region and a commitment to delivering positive outcomes for people and communities are also important.

You should be willing to build knowledge of Te Ao Māori and support tikanga and Te Reo Māori. It is also important that you either understand or are open to learning about te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in the public sector.

Benefits

  • Five weeks of annual leave.
  • Life insurance cover.
  • Income protection insurance.
  • Critical illness insurance for permanent staff.
