Job description
About Gradiant
Gradiant is a water technology company focused on advanced treatment and reuse of water and wastewater. Its solutions are built for critical industries such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, lithium and critical minerals, and renewable energy. The company develops proprietary end-to-end systems that help reduce water consumption, lower wastewater discharge, recover valuable resources, and convert wastewater into freshwater. Headquartered in Boston and founded at MIT, Gradiant has a global team of more than 1,400 employees.
Role overview
Gradiant is looking for a driven lab technologist to help develop specialty chemical solutions for advanced membrane systems. The position is centered on practical laboratory work, formulation development, experimentation, and performance analysis for antiscalants, membrane cleaners, and biocides used in UF, NF, and RO applications.
This opening is part of Gradiant’s NPI team and is intended for someone who wants to use chemistry and process understanding to solve real industrial challenges in water treatment.
What you will gain
- Direct exposure to industrial R&D and New Product Initiatives work
- Practical involvement in membrane performance, scaling control, and cleaning challenges
- Hands-on experience in formulation testing, laboratory trials, and data interpretation
- The opportunity to support technologies that make water treatment more efficient and sustainable
- Learning alongside a team solving high-impact industrial problems
Key responsibilities
- Plan and run experiments to assess lab-developed formulations for scaling control, membrane cleaning, and biofouling reduction.
- Carry out static beaker trials and dynamic membrane flow-cell tests using both synthetic water and actual process water.
- Set up experiments, prepare solutions and related materials, and maintain safe lab operations and good laboratory practices.
- Review experimental results to spot trends, compare outcomes, and suggest refinements or follow-up testing.
- Record observations and findings through technical notes, protocol revisions, inventory documentation, and draft report formats.
Qualifications and experience
- Polytechnic or university student in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Genuine interest in water chemistry, membrane systems, specialty chemicals, or industrial water treatment.
- Exposure to water testing, lab experimentation, or data analysis will be an added advantage.
- 1 to 2 years of experience in the water industry is preferred, especially with EPCs, OEMs, or technology companies.
- Senior applicants should bring 3 or more years of experience and a track record of project leadership.
- Curious mindset and willingness to learn through experimentation.
- Practical, problem-solving approach to work.
- Persistent, positive, and proactive attitude.
- Careful adherence to laboratory procedures and safety requirements.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving, innovation-led environment.
- Clear communication and presentation skills for sharing technical results.
