About the opportunity
ALS is seeking a Lead Occupational Hygienist to join its Environmental & Occupational division in a rare permanent opening. Based in Penrose, Auckland, this role supports industrial and occupational hygiene services across a broad range of sectors while helping clients protect worker health and reduce workplace risk.
You will be working with a supportive, experienced team in a position that suits someone who is technically strong, client-oriented, and keen to expand their capability. The role operates Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with some flexibility depending on business requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Provide environmental and occupational hygiene services across core occupational hygiene disciplines for clients in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and mining/mineral processing.
- Support project delivery from start to finish under the guidance of the Environmental & Occupational Hygiene Manager.
- Carry out health risk assessments, design exposure monitoring plans, and complete monitoring activities, including mould and methamphetamine sampling.
- Analyse findings, interpret results, and prepare, review, and present technical reports.
- Offer clear, practical advice to help control employee exposure to harmful workplace environmental conditions.
- Respond promptly to client questions and provide technical support that keeps clients informed throughout the process.
- Prepare quotations based on approved scopes of work and assist with client relationship management and business development when required.
- Keep accurate records and documentation, work in line with relevant OHS and industry requirements, and stay current with scientific and legal developments.
- Be willing and able to travel locally and within New Zealand as needed.
What you need
- A tertiary qualification in OHS or a closely related science field, or equivalent relevant background.
- OHTA training, specifically W201 Basic Principles in Occupational Hygiene.
- A Bachelor of Science and/or substantial experience from a scientific or environmental background is considered an advantage.
- At least 5 years of practical experience in occupational hygiene processes and measurement is preferred.
- Experience in identifying and managing risk will be beneficial.
- Full membership at NZOHS level.
- Working knowledge of applicable New Zealand legislation and AS/NZ standards.
- Competence with the Microsoft Office suite.
- A valid, unrestricted driver’s licence.
