Job description
About HealthCorps
HealthCorps is a nationwide nonprofit focused on helping communities overcome health-related challenges through programs for teens that blend education, leadership, and service learning. Its model centers on near-peer mentorship, partnering with colleges and universities to place college-age mentors in schools as relatable role models who motivate students to lead positive change in their families, schools, and neighborhoods. The organization’s approach is built on the belief that limited access to health education can contribute to long-term social, emotional, and physical barriers.
The organization’s culture is shaped by mission focus, an entrepreneurial mindset, teamwork, a belief in people as the core strength of the organization, and a commitment to creating change within teams and the communities served.
Role Overview
This position sits at the intersection of curriculum development and program execution. HealthCorps works with thousands of students each year on nutrition, mental health, and fitness through college mentors, and this role helps ensure the training behind that work is practical, clear, and effective.
As the Learning & Development Specialist, you will lead mentor onboarding and ongoing development, work closely with curriculum and program teams, and help make sure mentors are prepared to deliver lessons confidently in real school settings. The role also involves strengthening mentors’ understanding of program operations such as activity logs, proof of programming, photo and story collection, and school communication. You will help test new curriculum before it is launched, making sure activities are realistic for the time available, the setting, and the level of training mentors receive.
Much of the mentor population is made up of pre-health college students preparing for careers in medicine, public health, and healthcare, so the coaching and learning experience you create will support both their work at HealthCorps and their future professional growth. You will report to the Manager of Mentor Experience and collaborate with curriculum, program, and evaluation teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and deliver onboarding that prepares mentors to lead sessions in both classroom and club-based environments, engage different age groups, and respond effectively when plans change.
- Create ongoing development opportunities such as office hours, live monthly sessions, and coaching touchpoints that help mentors grow in confidence and skill.
- Produce useful training assets tailored to mentor workflows, including videos, guides, templates, and quick-reference materials.
- Review lesson plans and activities before launch to check clarity, materials needs, and fit within a 60-minute time block.
- Share implementation-focused feedback with the curriculum team so lessons are designed for real-world delivery.
- Convert curriculum content into mentor-friendly training materials that explain not just what to teach, but how to teach it.
- Support Regional Program Managers by equipping them with training tools while they provide local oversight and accountability.
- Work with the data team to identify what is working, what is not, and where mentors may need more support.
- Design learning experiences that match how college students prefer to consume content, such as short videos, text-based tips, push notifications, and interactive modules.
- Test new training formats, including podcasts, quick-tip video content, and LMS-based learning.
- Stay informed on what engages today’s college-aged mentors and adapt training approaches accordingly.
- Spend around 10% to 15% of time in the field observing mentors, discussing their experiences, and using those insights to improve training.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience, plus at least 3 years of hands-on work in education, instructional design, curriculum development, youth development, training and coaching, public health, or a similar field.
- Working knowledge of instructional design methods and the ability to apply them in fast-paced, time-limited training settings.
- Proven comfort working with young adults, especially college students, and tailoring communication and support to their needs.
- Experience across different learning environments or age groups will be considered an advantage.
- Strong technology comfort, including learning management systems such as LearnUpon, video editing, Canva, and the ability to quickly learn new tools.
- Willingness and ability to travel nationally as required, estimated at 10% to 15% of the time.
- Comfort working from home with occasional evening hours and some overnight travel during the year.
- Ability to sit for long periods while working at a computer and lift up to 15 pounds when needed.
- Background screening and reference verification are required before employment can be finalized.
- The company may assign additional duties as business needs change, and flexibility is expected.
Ideal Skills and Strengths
- Passion for youth development, health education, and addressing health inequities in community settings.
- Practical instructional design thinking with a solid understanding of how adults and young adults learn.
- Confidence in leading live training sessions and keeping participants engaged through Zoom or Teams.
- Strong coaching ability with a balanced approach to feedback that is direct, constructive, and encouraging.
- Collaborative communication style with the judgment to escalate, align, and decide appropriately.
- Comfort building programs and resources in ambiguous, from-scratch environments.
- Adaptability and a growth mindset that can model learning for others.
- Creative problem-solving ability and a habit of generating solutions when challenges arise.
