Job description

Role overview

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks is seeking qualified Linespersons to join its Southern Electric Power Distribution teams. This is a permanent full-time field role for experienced professionals, not an entry-level traineeship.

Base locations: Poole, New Forest, Yeovil, Salisbury, West London, Slough, Reading, Swindon, Melksham, Andover, Oxford, Portsmouth, Isle of Wight, Basingstoke, Aldershot, and Petersfield.

Pay: Circa £50k OTE, with a base salary of £34,749 to £40,939 plus overtime and standby payments.

What the employer offers

  • A chance to get started productively from day one.
  • All required tools and PPE supplied.
  • Access to a company vehicle.
  • A pay structure tied to skills progression, with increases as your capabilities develop.
  • Overtime and standby compensation.
  • Long-term job security in a sustainable sector, along with ongoing opportunities to progress.
  • Access to a wider benefits package designed to support family life, finances, and wellbeing.

Key duties

In this role, you will work outdoors across a range of weather conditions and be expected to respond quickly when urgent network issues arise.

  • Carry out construction and repair work across the network, covering LV up to and including 11kV/33kV systems.
  • Maintain a strong safety focus and help reinforce a positive safety culture for yourself and your colleagues.
  • Respond promptly to emergency callouts and situations where rapid attendance is required.
  • Undertake out-of-hours standby duties and attend short-notice work during storm events and severe weather.

Candidate profile

Applicants must already be qualified and experienced in line work. This role is specifically for skilled Linespersons, not trainees.

  • Previous experience working as an electrical linesperson.
  • DNO industry experience in the UK, or overseas-recognised overhead line qualifications covering LV, HV, 11kV and 33kV from a recognised training school.
  • Experience or certification in 11kV live line working is a strong advantage.
  • Demonstrable experience in the construction, repair, and operation of electrical plant and equipment.
  • A strong safety mindset and consistent adherence to safe working guidance.
  • Clear communication skills, including the ability to explain technical matters in a practical way.
  • Enthusiasm, drive, and flexibility to adapt to changing business and project priorities.
  • Willingness to complete standby duties and attend urgent work at short notice during severe weather.
  • A full UK driving licence is required.

Benefits and additional information

Flexible First working options are available. The role also includes access to family-friendly leave entitlements such as maternity and adoption pay, and paternity leave, along with wellbeing support like private healthcare discounts, gym membership discounts, a free online GP, 24/7 counselling, interest-free loans for tech and transport season tickets, and the Cycle to Work scheme.

SSE operates as an equal opportunity employer and is committed to reasonable adjustments for candidates who need support during the recruitment process. The company welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and particularly encourages applications from people who are underrepresented in the industry or workforce.

If successful, you will need to complete a criminality check and a credit check before starting work.
