Job description

About the role

This position is for a Mechanical Design Engineer who will take full ownership of the physical systems behind dependable robot operations. The role focuses on connecting robot hardware with demanding environments, operator workflows, ease of servicing, and iterative product improvement. Your contribution will directly influence how robots are designed, deployed, maintained, and refined in production.

You will work across mechanisms, structural design, thermal and environmental considerations, prototyping, and manufacturing readiness. The work suits someone who enjoys solving difficult mechanical problems with fast feedback, high operational importance, and direct impact on machine behavior in the field.

Key responsibilities

  • Create and improve the mechanical framework that enables robot operations across global deployments.
  • Design mechanisms and structural assemblies for teleoperation equipment, operator stations, field accessories, and robot-mounted tooling where mechanical engineering is essential.
  • Define mechanical interfaces between robots, payloads, sensors, and deployment settings, including mounting, sealing, vibration control, ingress protection, and service access.
  • Develop the physical equivalent of a reliable data path through layouts and assemblies that keep telemetry, sensing, and calibration consistent in real operating conditions.
  • Translate service issues, wear patterns, and field feedback into stronger product designs and long-term mechanical improvements.
  • Balance reliability, manufacturability, weight, cost, and serviceability across hardware intended for production use.
  • Collaborate closely with robotics, autonomy, electrical, and operations teams to ensure mechanical decisions improve the overall product and fleet.
  • Help establish the mechanical base for a platform designed for scale and ongoing iteration.

Requirements

  • Strong grounding in mechanical engineering fundamentals, with evidence of delivering hardware into production or close to production.
  • Experience in mechanism design, structural design, DFM/DFA, tolerancing, and reliability-focused design for dynamic or deployed systems.
  • Working knowledge of CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or similar software, along with practical experience creating drawings, BOMs, and working with vendors.
  • Ability to produce assemblies that remain robust, manufacturable, and easy to troubleshoot under real-world conditions such as shock, dust, temperature variation, and misuse.
  • Comfort handling ambiguous, cross-functional challenges from initial concept through validation and scale-up.
  • A proactive working style, sound judgment, and a strong preference for building and testing solutions.

Nice-to-have experience

  • Background working on robots, mobile platforms, robotic arms, or human-scale interaction hardware.
  • Exposure to teleoperation systems, haptics, operator furniture, or low-latency physical human-machine interfaces.
  • Hands-on prototyping experience with machining, 3D printing, sheet metal, casting, or rapid iteration alongside machine shops and contract manufacturers.
  • Familiarity with sensors, cameras, LiDAR, and cable routing or strain relief in electromechanical products.
  • Exposure to environmental validation such as ingress protection, vibration, drop testing, basic FEA, or field service-oriented design.

Who fits this role

  • People who want to build hardware with meaningful real-world impact.
  • Highly technical, ambitious candidates who move quickly and enjoy momentum.
  • Problem-solvers who value short design-to-field feedback loops and strong ownership.
  • Engineers who see mechanical decisions as strategic advantages through reuse, modularity, serviceability, and cost efficiency.
  • Those who want to shape how intelligent machines are built and supported at scale.
