Job description

Company overview

MB Century is a well-established specialist delivering practical engineering solutions across geothermal drilling, reservoir engineering services, and hydro and geothermal power station projects. From its head office in Taupō, New Zealand, the company also provides specialist fabrication, machining, and industrial coating services. With offices in Indonesia and the Philippines, the business is building an international presence to support expanding markets.

The team is focused on creating real-world solutions that support a more sustainable future.

Role overview

This position is mainly based at the Wairakei office, with regular time spent at client locations both in New Zealand and overseas. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will contribute mechanical engineering and design services across geothermal, hydropower, and broader mechanical projects.

Key duties

  • Create mechanical designs for steam-field, geothermal, and hydropower systems.
  • Develop engineering solutions for plant changes, upgrades, and maintenance-related design work.
  • Assist with site engineering tasks such as commissioning, quality records, and technical support.
  • Prepare technical documents including process design basis, functional specifications, instrumentation needs, and mechanical equipment specifications.
  • Lead small to medium design and design-build assignments, covering budgeting, timelines, procurement, and cost monitoring.
  • Contribute to tender preparation and estimating activities.
  • Maintain strong client connections and respond quickly to client requirements.
  • Guide and support junior engineers and graduates.
  • Work in line with Safety in Design, quality management processes, and the company’s health, safety, and environmental standards.

Candidate profile

The ideal applicant will bring at least five years of experience in the energy sector, preferably in geothermal, hydropower, or process engineering settings. You should have a solid grasp of piping design principles and mechanical systems, and be comfortable working with teams from different disciplines.

You will also need a mechanical engineering degree, preferably from a Washington Accord-recognised institution, and be eligible for or already progressing toward CPEng or IMechE status. Experience leading projects and coordinating work to meet budget and schedule goals is important, along with strong communication skills, client-facing confidence, openness to travel, and willingness to work internationally when needed. Proficiency with piping design and drafting tools is also required.

What the role offers

This opportunity combines office-based design work, practical site involvement, and project management responsibilities, making it a strong fit for someone who enjoys variety and wants to broaden their engineering experience across multiple energy sectors. The role also offers a chance to contribute to New Zealand’s renewable energy industry while supporting international work, all within a team environment that encourages technical and leadership growth.

Application requirements

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand and must either already live in Taupō or be prepared to relocate there.
