Job description

Role overview

This position is centered on the safe and efficient manual movement of parcels in a warehouse-style environment. The job involves loading, unloading, sorting, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing packages. Team members may rotate through different stations such as loader, unloader, palletizer, scanner, weigh/key operator (SWAK), quality assurance (QA), facer, switcher, and similar operational roles.

Specialized assignments

In addition to the standard duties and any other tasks assigned by management, some Package Handler assignments require extra training and responsibilities.

  • Package Handler Trainer: teaches other package handlers safe and efficient methods for loading, unloading, palletizing, and scanning so parcels move smoothly through the operation.
  • Package Handler - Air: performs a multi-step parcel inspection process to help ensure that Air Restricted parcels are not loaded into an air container.

Essential duties

  • Uses the hand-to-surface method for all parcel handling.
  • Loads and unloads packages from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor carts, and loading racks.
  • Performs repetitive lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling for about 3 to 5 hours, with the possibility of working one or more shifts per day.
  • Sorts packages by identifying the right conveyor system through scanning, reading labels and charts, checking numbers, and retaining information.
  • Completes other assigned duties as needed.

Additional responsibilities for trainer and air roles

  • Trains new package handlers on effective unloading, loading, palletizing, transporting, handling small items, SWAK, and handling non-conveyable parcels.
  • Provides extra coaching to handlers who need more instruction, as directed by management.
  • Gives feedback on proper parcel handling methods when required.
  • Reinforces dock safety standards among peer package handlers.
  • Understands and demonstrates all required processes and procedures by example.
  • Advises managers about sorting conditions so operational efficiency decisions can be made.
  • Helps implement new parcel handling procedures and techniques.
  • Continues regular loading, unloading, palletizing, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling while training others.
  • Scans each parcel in the air consolidation area and checks for hazardous materials or ORM-D designation.
  • Loads parcels into the unit load device when required.
  • Completes “restricted parcel return to shipper” notifications in SCMS for air-restricted parcels.
  • Continues regular loading, unloading, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of parcels.
