Role overview
The Paint Prep Technician prepares transformer units for painting by cleaning surfaces, applying filler, taping, sanding, and completing other prep steps needed before the units move into the paint area. This role requires strict adherence to safety rules, product quality expectations, and company procedures.
Key duties
- Check the work order and supporting checklist carefully to ensure the job is completed to the required specification.
- Move transformer units to the correct paint-department location using material-handling equipment such as a forklift or crane.
- Inspect incoming units for visible defects before prep work begins and report any issues to a lead or supervisor.
- Ready units for paint by removing stickers and adhesive residue, then applying filler, taping, sanding, and cleaning the surface.
- Carry out quality verification checks, including confirming the unit is not leaking before it leaves the area for paint.
- Follow all safety requirements, including the correct use of PPE such as respirators, gloves, and safety glasses.
- Keep the workstation and surrounding area clean, organized, and safe at all times.
- Support other tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
- OSHA 10 certification is preferred.
- At least 1 year of experience in paint manufacturing is preferred.
- At least 1 year of experience operating material-handling equipment such as forklifts or cranes is preferred.
- Familiarity with basic hand tools is preferred.
- A strong record of safety-focused work is required.
- Ability to follow all safety and environmental compliance rules and report hazards, injuries, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Ability to read and understand work orders.
- Ability to help meet department and production targets.
- Commitment to product quality that meets company and customer expectations.
- Strong work ethic, solid communication skills, problem-solving ability, team-oriented mindset, and close attention to detail.
- Willingness to follow employee handbook policies and reflect the organization’s core values.
- Ability to learn tasks in other departments and step in when needed.
- Ability to complete required compliance and safety training.
- Flexibility to work varied schedules and remain effective in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Must be able to pass a respiratory fit test.
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs from floor to waist and waist to shoulder repeatedly.
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
- Ability to bend, squat, and kneel repeatedly for extended periods.
- Ability to climb ladders repeatedly.
- Ability to maintain balance on a ladder with three points of contact for long periods.
- Comfort working in hot and cold conditions since the manufacturing environment is not climate controlled.
