Job description

Role overview

His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Erlestoke. This is a hands-on support position focused on helping the prison run smoothly, securely, and safely.

What the role involves

You’ll be part of a team handling a mix of security, administrative, and practical duties. The work includes gate security and searches, processing deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The job also involves physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking across prison grounds to escort vehicles.

Who this role suits

This position does not require formal qualifications. It may suit someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in pressured situations, uses sound judgement, and works well with others in a busy, fast-moving environment.

Working pattern

The post requires rotating shift work, including nights and weekends, so the prison can continue operating around the clock.

Career development

This role offers a strong introduction to prison operations and can open doors to other roles within the prison service. It may also support progression through the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Training and support

Successful applicants can expect structured training, along with development opportunities to build skills and progress in the service.

Pay and benefits

The advertised salary is £30,491. Alongside base pay, the role includes annual leave that starts at 25 days and increases to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 bank, public, and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 customer service apprenticeship, and the Civil Service pension scheme. Additional benefits include season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Additional information

This is described as an extraordinary job with an opportunity to contribute to public protection by supporting important work carried out in prisons every day. Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, though occasional interaction may occur depending on the prison.
