You may be involved in security checks and gate searches, handling incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The work is active and varied, combining desk-based tasks with physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison site to escort vehicles.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. This role may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed in pressured situations, and is comfortable working in a fast-moving environment. Strong judgement, common sense, and a team-oriented approach are important.
Working pattern
You will be expected to work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, to support continuous prison operations.
Career development
This role offers practical insight into how a prison functions and can open doors to other opportunities within the prison service, including the option to progress through the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay
The salary for this position is £30,491.
Training and progression
Successful candidates will receive training and have access to development opportunities to support long-term progression.
Benefits
Alongside base pay, the package includes annual leave starting at 25 days and rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays. Additional support includes access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
This role involves limited contact with prisoners compared with prison officer roles, though some interaction may still occur depending on the prison. The role also contributes to public protection by supporting the daily work carried out in prisons.
