Job description
About Notion
Notion is an AI-powered collaborative workspace designed to help teams and agents work side by side. It brings knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools into one environment so work becomes more connected, efficient, and easier to manage. People of all sizes, from individuals and small teams to large organizations, use Notion to run their work.
Employees at Notion are treated as the first users of the product, and the company emphasizes craftsmanship, durable products, and the idea that meaningful work remains deeply human. The team is focused on shaping how people work together in the AI era, whether that means creating a company’s system of record, building and managing AI agents, or automating repetitive tasks so customers can spend more time on work that matters.
About the Role
This position is for a product designer who can help shape software that feels enduring, thoughtful, and approachable. The team is looking for someone with strong product judgment, UX intuition, technical ability, refined taste, and a high standard of execution. The work involves solving challenging design problems for a product used by a wide range of customers.
The role may be based in San Francisco or New York City. The team works from the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, which are the company’s anchor days, and the person in this role should be comfortable collaborating in person on those days.
What You’ll Do
- Create product ideas that balance long-term vision, design quality, delivery speed, and commercial value.
- Shape new features from early concept through user experience and final visual polish.
- Partner with engineers to manage projects from start to finish and bring ideas to release.
- Work with Customer Experience, Sales, and Customer Success teams to understand the needs, preferences, and pain points of different user groups, then use those insights to help guide roadmap planning and prioritization.
- Collaborate with Marketing to develop effective storytelling across the website, product experience, help content, and other touchpoints throughout the user journey.
- Develop intuitive, practical, and consistent design patterns while refining the design system as the product grows.
What We’re Looking For
- At least 5 years of experience, with the ability to independently lead projects from beginning to end.
- A strong habit of learning from users, identifying their needs, and advocating for the best possible experience.
- Comfort with ambiguous problems and a strong sense for accessible mental models and simple, usable flows.
- The ability to create interfaces that are clear, elegant, and easy to understand.
- A practical mindset that considers business impact, feasibility, and tradeoffs rather than focusing only on visual polish or abstract ideas.
- Strong opinions that can evolve with input, plus the ability to listen well and work effectively with many different stakeholders.
- Skill in combining writing and visuals to explain ideas clearly and build alignment.
- Comfort working across project management, engineering, research, data, and other design teammates.
Nice-to-Have Experience
- Background designing and building excellent tools with small teams.
- A perspective or skill set that adds something unique to the team.
- Firsthand experience with the frustration of fragmented tools and disconnected information.
- Familiarity with pioneers such as Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and Bret Victor.
- Ability to code as part of the design process.
Compensation and Benefits
Notion offers competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits. The final offer depends on factors such as location, role scope, complexity, and the candidate’s experience and expertise. For candidates based in San Francisco, the estimated base salary range is $205,000 to $300,000 per year.
Application and Privacy Notice
By submitting an application, candidates acknowledge that Notion and its affiliates and subsidiaries will collect and process their information in line with Notion’s Global Recruiting Privacy Policy and NYLL 144.
AI at Notion
The company expects employees to be curious, eager to experiment, and willing to use AI as a practical partner in their work. Deep AI specialization is not required for every role, but where AI fluency is essential, that requirement will be stated clearly in the qualifications. People who succeed at Notion tend to use AI to think more effectively and make their work easier for others to build on.
Equal Opportunity and Accommodations
Notion welcomes candidates from a broad range of backgrounds and encourages people to apply even if they do not meet every listed qualification. The company is an equal opportunity employer and does not make hiring decisions based on protected characteristics. In line with applicable law, qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records will be considered. Reasonable accommodations are available during the application process, and candidates who need support should inform their recruiter.
Notion also states that it does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other legally protected characteristics. The company provides reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans during the application process.
