Job description

About Smartly

Smartly helps New Zealand businesses take care of their people with less effort and more confidence. The platform is trusted by more than 22,000 businesses for payroll, supported by a team that focuses on accurate, timely pay and compliance with local legislation.

The company’s ambition goes beyond payroll. Smartly is investing in new products and experiences designed to make people management easier for both employers and employees. As part of Datacom, it combines the energy and flexibility of a growth-focused business with the scale and backing of a major technology organisation.

The opportunity

Smartly is seeking a capable Product Manager to influence the direction of a major product area. In this role, you will collaborate with customers, designers, engineers, and internal stakeholders to identify customer pain points and turn them into valuable product outcomes.

The position calls for both strategic thinking and strong execution, with a focus on helping the product portfolio grow through thoughtful delivery and continuous learning. The role can be based anywhere in New Zealand and offers remote, hybrid, or office-based working options.

What you will do

  • Work closely with customers and the wider business to discover what is performing well, what needs improvement, and where the greatest opportunities lie.
  • Translate customer and business insight into practical experiments, product ideas, and solution direction.
  • Partner with a cross-functional team and use AI, data, and customer input to learn fast and keep improving.
  • Deliver in small, valuable increments while adapting plans as new information emerges.
  • Bring together the right people to solve problems, make decisions, and keep delivery on track.
  • Strengthen ways of working by sharing knowledge, questioning assumptions, and identifying better approaches to getting results.

What we are looking for

The ideal candidate will bring product management experience in a SaaS or technology setting, along with strong customer focus and a genuine drive to solve real problems. You should be confident setting priorities, shaping roadmaps, and communicating clearly with a range of stakeholders.

Analytical thinking, sound judgment, and comfort working with Agile delivery teams are important for success in this role. We are also looking for someone who is curious, proactive, and open to experimentation, especially in a fast-changing environment.

A growth mindset and interest in AI, emerging technologies, and modern ways of working will be highly valued. Experience in payroll, HR, workforce management, fintech, or other regulated software environments is a bonus.

What you will get

  • Flexible working arrangements, including a hybrid setup for Auckland and Wellington team members and fully remote options elsewhere in New Zealand.
  • A wellness allowance and birthday leave.
  • Access to Datacom employee benefits and learning and development opportunities.
  • A collaborative Product team that is supportive and engaging.
  • The chance to contribute to products that have a direct impact on thousands of businesses and employees.
  • A positive workplace culture with regular social moments such as morning tea, team celebrations, and shared lunches.
  • A team environment where people are genuinely supported to grow and thrive.

Why Smartly?

Smartly is built by people who are curious, passionate, and committed to delivering great outcomes for customers and colleagues. If you are interested in building impactful products, exploring new ideas, using AI and other emerging technologies, and helping shape the future of payroll and people management software in New Zealand, this role could be a strong fit.

Applicants are asked to submit a CV and a cover letter explaining why they want to join Smartly.
