Role Overview
Cain & Associates is looking for an experienced Project Estimator to join its expanding construction team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This is a full-time position with a hybrid work arrangement and a competitive salary plus benefits. The role is ideal for someone who is detail-focused, confident with numbers, and skilled at identifying and pricing construction opportunities.
In this position, you will be responsible for building accurate estimates, assessing tender and specification details, coordinating bid submissions, and supporting planning activities from early project review through award. Your work will directly influence project selection, pricing strategy, and overall project success.
Key Duties
- Develop thorough cost estimates for construction work, covering labor, materials, equipment, subcontracted work, and overhead.
- Examine drawings, technical specifications, and tender packages to understand scope, requirements, and risk areas.
- Use Bluebeam and Accubid/Trimble estimating tools to prepare precise and competitive bids.
- Work with Project Managers, Operations personnel, and other stakeholders to clarify scope, schedules, and deliverables.
- Research market pricing to keep up with current labor and material cost trends.
- Request and compare pricing from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Negotiate pricing and contractual terms with vendors and subcontractors to support margin and profitability goals.
- Assemble bid submissions and verify they meet client instructions and tender conditions.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cost-planning tasks for projects.
- Keep estimates, bid files, contracts, and related records well organized and up to date.
- Take part in bid review discussions and offer recommendations on opportunities worth pursuing.
What We Are Looking For
- Background in construction estimating, project estimating, or a comparable estimating position.
- Solid understanding of construction techniques, materials, and accepted industry practices.
- Hands-on experience with Bluebeam and Accubid/Trimble estimating software.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
- Well-developed negotiation and vendor coordination skills.
- High level of accuracy, with strong organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to handle several bids and projects at once while meeting deadlines.
- Good communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships.
- Experience working alongside project management and operations teams.
