Job description
About the Company
Established in 2017, The KPM Group is a boutique government affairs consulting firm headquartered in Washington, DC. The firm partners with emerging as well as small- to mid-sized biotech companies working on innovative therapies for rare diseases and other underserved patient groups.
Rather than operating like a conventional lobbying shop, KPM helps smaller innovators work through the complex policy environment at both the state and federal levels. Its clients are advancing meaningful medical treatments but often do not have the extensive government affairs resources available to larger pharmaceutical companies.
KPM’s approach to government affairs is rooted in thoughtful policy analysis, purposeful engagement, and long-term relationship building across the policy ecosystem. Because the team is small and boutique in nature, employees are given substantial responsibility early in their careers and often collaborate directly with C-suite executives, patient advocacy leaders, and policymakers.
The firm is looking for people who are intellectually curious, mission-focused, and motivated by work that supports emerging companies and patient communities that are often overlooked.
About the Role
The Public Affairs Manager will help drive client government affairs strategies, track and interpret policy changes, and contribute to advocacy efforts for emerging biotech organizations. The role calls for strong critical thinking, policy interpretation, and problem-solving skills to turn legislative and regulatory developments into clear, actionable client strategies.
This position also involves strengthening relationships with policymakers, patient groups, and other important stakeholders. The right candidate will do well in a collaborative, entrepreneurial setting and will be energized by policy work that affects smaller innovators and underserved patient populations.
Key Responsibilities
- Track federal legislative and regulatory activity that may affect biotechnology, rare disease policy, and healthcare innovation.
- Research policy issues and draft clear analytical memos, briefings, and client presentations.
- Own client-facing government affairs projects and contribute to strategy development that supports policy goals.
- Develop and sustain relationships with Congressional offices, federal agencies, patient advocacy groups, and industry partners.
- Support and coordinate client interaction with policymakers and outside stakeholders.
- Organize and assist with client events such as Capitol Hill fly-ins, policy briefings, and stakeholder meetings.
- Prepare briefing materials, policy summaries, and internal strategy documentation.
- Act as a communication bridge between clients, firm leadership, and external policy contacts.
- Use sound judgment and strategic thinking to help clients work through complex policy issues.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, or a closely related discipline is preferred.
- 3 to 7 years of experience in Capitol Hill, government affairs consulting, a trade association, or a public affairs/policy position.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities with the capacity to evaluate policy shifts and understand their strategic impact.
- Proven problem-solving skills and solid judgment when working through complex policy environments.
- Excellent ability to build relationships and engage stakeholders effectively.
- Strong spoken and written communication skills.
- Well organized, with the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities at once.
- Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced setting while balancing competing demands.
- Professional, trustworthy, and able to handle confidential information with discretion.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this role is $90,000 to $105,000, depending on experience. In addition, the position includes a profit-sharing plan and benefits.
