Job description

Role overview

Barts Health NHS Trust is looking for a qualified, energetic, and committed radiographer to join a welcoming and highly capable imaging team. This Band 5 role is based at The Royal London Hospital in east London, with work also connected to Mile End Hospital. The position supports high-quality patient care across busy imaging services in a major teaching hospital environment.

About the sites

The Royal London Hospital is a landmark hospital in the east end of London and is home to the London Air Ambulance. It is a major trauma and stroke centre and also hosts one of the UK’s largest children’s hospitals. Mile End Hospital has recently been transformed into a community diagnostic and early diagnosis centre, helping local patients access imaging services more quickly.

Both imaging departments are equipped with modern technology and offer exposure to a broad mix of imaging modalities and specialist areas.

Key duties

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support the safe and efficient operation of the imaging department. The role includes carrying out a wide range of x-ray examinations to a consistently high standard, rotating through ED, general x-ray, fluoroscopy, and theatres, and taking part in a 24/7, 365-day service.

You will also help supervise assistant practitioners, imaging assistants, students, apprentices, and visitors. A key part of the job is supporting patient flow across the trust by helping move emergency and inpatient cases through imaging so that same-day scans can be delivered wherever possible.

Professionalism is essential in this role, along with practice that aligns with HCPC standards and the ability to build respectful, trustworthy, and open working relationships with colleagues.

Training and development

As a large teaching hospital, the trust places strong emphasis on career growth and professional development. Opportunities mentioned include mentorship, radiographer reporting, radiographer-led line insertions in Interventional Radiology, sonographer training, and sonographer ACP development.

Additional information

Barts Health is one of the UK’s largest NHS trusts and among the country’s leading healthcare providers. Its goal is to be a high-performing group of hospitals known for innovation, excellent patient safety, and compassionate care across east London and beyond. The trust also aims to be a great place to work, guided by its WeCare values and an inclusive culture where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold either a BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or the Diploma of the College of Radiographers, and must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
