Role overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is looking to add a Railroad Flagger in Gainesville, Florida. This full-time field role is centered on protecting crews working on or near active rail lines by managing train movements and ensuring federal railroad safety standards are followed. The position supports work for major railroads, short line operators, transit agencies, state rail programs, and contractors.
Reporting and travel
This position reports to the District Manager. Regular travel is a major part of the role, with travel expected roughly 50% to 85% of the time on average. The job may also require extended periods away from home, including travel that can last for months.
Compensation
Pay is stated at $25 to $37, depending on experience.
Experience and core qualifications
Candidates should have at least 2 years of experience in a railroad-related environment such as a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, State DOT rail division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant. Experience in the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department is preferred.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate field activities at the work location.
- Keep dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors informed and aligned.
- Run safety briefings before work starts.
- Apply and uphold railroad, state, and federal safety rules.
- Confirm that contractors have met the required training standards.
- Identify and correct safety or rule violations.
- Prepare daily documentation covering jobsite activity.
- Maintain on-track safety in line with federal regulations.
Skills and job requirements
- Comfort with basic computer tools such as Citrix, email, phone systems, and texting applications.
- Ability to work confidently on Android tablets and smartphones.
- Strong organization and sharp attention to detail.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of railroad engineering, construction, design, and safety practices.
- Ability to develop and sustain strong client relationships.
- Willingness to travel for long stretches.
- Ability to complete federal, client, and company-required training.
Work environment and physical demands
This is a field-based position. The role requires English communication skills in speaking, reading, and writing. Candidates must be prepared to travel or drive long distances, stand for extended periods, and walk on uneven surfaces. The work may involve exposure to extreme heat and cold, dusty conditions, and noisy surroundings. Good near, far, color, and peripheral vision is required, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds is necessary.
